My horse when I was a teenager ran because she loved it... no whip or other inducement ever needed. In fact, often you had to keep a tight rein on her to keep her from taking off. And yep, she was the fastest horse in the acreage neighborhood. <br /><br />I'm sure there are treat-rewards for a race well run. Long ago, when I read those books about race horses, there were definite such rewards. <br /><br />But really, it's in the running itself, the competition, or it's not a true race horse. Sure, winner gets to mount all the mares he can handle, but that's afterwards. The horses would run faster if they knew they had a more immediate reward waiting just beyond the finish line. One of those mares, for instance. Or a beer.<br /><br />Looks like I'm still on my Marx Brothers kick.
