The Mountain Lion King is now available!

It's here! Rebecca beat me to the punch by pre-reviewing yesterday, but I wrote this blog and, by Castiel, I'm going to post it. My first self-published Talbot's Peak novel, The Mountain Lion King, is now up at Smashwords and Amazon. It should be up on Barnes & Noble, Apple, and your favorite e-book outlet within a week or so.

Cougar shifter Rick Donnelly is happy living alone on his mountain and isn't looking for company. Then company literally falls into his lap, in the form of tiger-shifter Nilambari, who's fleeing from her arranged marriage to the vicious Ravi Ghan. Rick has no love for tigers, but for this terrified tigress he's willing to make an exception. Provided he can defend them both from Ravi, who's not about to let his bride-to-be go without a fight.

Regular readers will know this book began as a series of posts here on the blog. The original, now-rewritten opening can be found here. Plus, here's a new snippet to whet your appetite:

Excerpt

Rick stepped in from a night in the foyer and stopped dead. Now here was something you didn’t wake up to every day: a woman trying to wipe the dirt off cave walls. She’d already swept the floor. He could easily picture the bedchamber scrubbed to within an inch of its life, the bed neatly made. “You’re up early,” he said cautiously.

“You’re up late,” she countered. She continued to dust and straighten. “Would you like tea?”

“No tea.” He stared about. Son of a gun, it really did look better in here. But just the same … “You don’t need to do this. Really.”

“I do,” she said. “Really. Do you never clean in here?”

“It’s a cave. You can’t clean a cave.”

“You can make it cleaner. This also.” She reached into a pile she was building on a chair and held up one of his shirts. “This needs to be washed, and the others too, and my own clothes. The sheets should be changed as well. Is there a stream or pool where I might launder them?”

This, Rick thought, is what happens when you let a woman into a bachelor den. He expected to find curtains hanging, and his kitchen didn’t even have windows. Part of him was pleased and touched she’d go to so much trouble. The rest was just bemused.

“Okay, okay. We’ll go into town. They have a laundromat.” Wait. Did he have any change? Scat. Civilization got complicated after a while. That was one reason he had abandoned it. “Just stop sweeping, all right?”

Nilambari’s eyes lit up. She set the broom aside. “Can I visit with Mrs. McMahon? She’ll know what herbs can be harvested here, and what plants are edible. I need to learn this. I will also need a bath.”

“What for?”

She stared at him as if he’d gone insane. “Mrs. McMahon is a fine herbivorous woman. I can’t go before her with fresh blood in my scent. It would be rude.”

Rick made a face. A bath? Wasn’t that why cats had tongues? Anyway, Elly was married to a wolf. He doubted if she found Vern’s scent insulting. His eating habits, maybe.

Still … Rick reminded himself he was speaking to a young female. Their thought processes differed from normal creatures’. “I suppose I’ll need a bath too?”

Nilambari fixed that young female stare on him. Rick gave in. “Fine. No time like the present. The pond should do, now that the horses are gone. Let’s get this mess over with.”

Be Careful What You Wish For

Gil looked out the window into his backyard.  Snowflakes fell adding another inch to the growing whiteness covering the lawn.  Hours earlier, he and Melody, his newest conquest, played in the hot tub until they stripped naked and got down to business.  Problem was his shorts and Melody’s bikini froze to the steps as the temperature outside the tub cooled and the water turned to ice.  Gil’s teeth still chattered and with each burst of wind that rattled the windows, he chaffed his arms.

A sneezed sounded from the guest bedroom down the hall.  Another followed.  A hoarse bark sound and Melody’s raspy voice called out.  “Gil, Rascal needs more water and so do I.”

Gil sighed.  He pulled his oversized sweatshirt back on and stuffed his sock covered feet back into his Sherpa lined slippers.  His two sizes too big sweatpants hung on in comical ways.  The ass and crotch area hung past his knees.  The waistband tie was knotted twice to keep the pants even up near where they were supposed to be and not up under his armpits. The arms of his sweat shirt almost draped over his hands until his fingers barely stuck out.  Gil began shuffling down the hall, muttering as he did.

Another voice called out, this one deeper and masculine.  “Come on boy, I need some water too.  And food would be nice.”

Great, Bruno was awake.  Gil shook his head and muttered more, making sure every word was only loud enough for his ears.  How in nuts near nirvana had he ended up with a grizzly bear shape shifter bodyguard and two squirrely half-bred mutts as his back up?  All Gil had gotten out of him so far was Lou had called in a favor some New Jersey shape shifter godfather owed him.  Gil didn’t want to know what was owed by whom to whom.  Enough screwy threats had come whizzing his way since he’d taken over as mayor of the Peak.  If back up and cover helped so be it.  Gil would appoint Bruno assistant deputy mayor if it got folks off Gil’s back and let him tend bar along with waiting tables at Rattigan’s without a bunch of shit getting stirred up.

Two sneezes sounded, followed by a third.  Gil caught his reflection in the full-length mirror on the wall outside his bedroom.  His hair stood-up all over his head.  Two days’ worth of beard crisscrossed his cheeks and chin.  And his blood shot eyes glowed in another worldly way.  Shifters weren’t supposed to get sick.  Problem was animal viruses didn’t follow conventional dictates.  The third sneeze echoed in Gil’s ears.  He hated being sick.  Who was gonna nursemaid him?

Happy Weekend Gang!

Once again I post late.  Sorry readers and followers!  I'm still getting back into gear with the release of Hot for Torrey on Wednesday and a new month and year.  I needed time to catch-up with my Spice Family and focus on projects on the home front as well as writing one.

I'm hard at work on three new stories.  Two of which take place in Cascade Bay.  Both are menages.  The third is about second chances at love with a middle aged couple who are thrust back together by a quirky wise-cracking deity of Celtic origins.

Remember to take care of you and your spice and loves.  Share a good book or two with each other.  Keep warm and remember a new year and new books make a great start to rest and relaxation and keeping those resolutions!

Smiles,

Damien Hancock's Mutant Werewolves

Pic from COAST TO COAST AM  ~

Painting: Late Night Encounter

Toronto based artist Shawn Pascuttini (spascuttini@hotmail.com) shares this painting he created while listening to Coast to Coast.

~~~
Tuesday howls and yowls, shapeshifter lovers.
First, apologies to everyone. I had planned to continue last week's flash scene, Someday My Wolf Prince Will Come.
However, fate and my muse intervened. Enter, the Mutant Werewolves. One is pictured above and was discovered hiding in plain sight on the COAST TO COAST AM website.
Yes, Damien Hancock, the powerful werewolf alpha responsible for taking over the town of Talbot's Peak, has a new unholy pack he's hired. Not only is Damien planning some realistic Halloween mischief... not only is he planning on 'disappearing' his enemies... but, for the rest of story -- so far -- keep on reading.
Her Midnight Stardust Cowboys
'Unedited' Chapter Sixty-six ~
"Dang it, pard, we're in Mayor Link's sights. What does that chimp shifter want now? We don't live in Talbot's Peak proper. And I ain't endorsin' him no how. Not over Vernon, one of my own wolf kind."
From the corner of his eye, Zance saw Sherilyn quickly glance in Lance Link's direction. "I thought he and Dolly were splitsville. Although, I didn't pay much attention to all the talk at the coffee shop, because who really cares?"
"Downright entertaining, their temporary breakup, if you like slapstick." Dontoya chuckled in his rumbly way. "Me and Zance happened onto the scene."
"I'm headin' the Mayor off at the pass, pard. Why don't you seat our mate, and I'll be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail."
"Countin' on it, pardner."
Zance paused only long enough to see Dontoya take hold of Sherilyn's elbow to assist her up the steps to their table. Guldurn it, her shapely figure encased in that glamorous, slinky gown nearly knocked his eyeballs out.
She was the most gorgeous woman ever created, and Zance mentally thanked the Goddess Moon that his wolf juice had saved her that fateful day, and now ran in her veins forever.
Most important though, Sherilyn belonged to him and Dontoya. Even more important by his reckoning, her heart embraced them both.
Zance strode through the burgeoning festive crowd, meeting Mayor Link and Mrs. Link near the edge of the highly polished dance floor.
"Happy new year, Lance. And, Dolly, don't you just shine this evening, beautiful and lovely as the full moon."
After giving him an audacious wink, Dolly presented her gloved hand, so heavy with the weight of her gemstone-loaded rings, Zance had to wonder if this had been Mayor Link's way of paying for his sexual transgressions.
He pressed a kiss on the top of her hand in an old-fashioned tribute to her womanhood. Dolly excused herself then, and departed with a rustle of her stiff satin skirts.
"Something I can do for you, Mayor?" Zance covertly studied Link's expression, but he'd put on his poker face.
"It's what I can do for you and Dontoya. What I have done to be precise." Link's large dark eyes remained inscrutable.
"Mayor, I ain't too good at playing these kind of politico games. If you got something to say, spit it out."
Link rocked back on his heels, and with confidence oozing out of his pores, he hooked his thumb in his waistcoat pocket. "I understand via the grapevine your mate Sherilyn Wingate, isn't it -- was struck with deadly force, and you came to her rescue."
"That's right. Both me and Dontoya." Zance gave Link his one-eyed stare, and waited.
"Can you identify who was behind the wheel?" The Mayor raised a bushy brow, his gaze bright in that alpha way of chimps.
"Nope. Not which one was drivin'. Only know who the truck belongs to, and saw who was in the passenger seat."
"I've got one of the Brady boys sitting in the pokey right now. Seems as though he confessed to swiping Ms. Wingate's pickup."
Reflexively, Zance stepped into his gunslinger's stance. "When?"
"Last night, during a drinking binge."
"Know I saw Tom Brady through the passenger window. Smelled him too."
The Mayor gave a slight nod of his head. "I'll have Tom Brady brought in for questioning on your say so. If the Sheriff gets something out of him, I'll need you to testify. You and Dontoya, if he saw the same. Agreed?"
"Yep. You and the Sheriff get the goods, and me and Dontoya will play it that way. Let justice take its course." On second thought, Zance added, "Won't be able to testify about how I saved Sherilyn, though."
"Nothing in the public record. Understood. We'll work out the details beforehand."
"And?" Zance asked at Link's telltale hesitation.
"Some of us in Talbot's Peak want to keep the town friendly for both shifters and humans. To put it in plain terms, I need backup."
"I got no problem with that."
"Figured as much. To my knowing, you and Dontoya have never been anti-social to any species." Link rocked back, his expression turning grave. "Got the word today that Damien Hancock is in a howling rage over how Talbot's Peak is changing -- all the newcomers, but mostly anyone with human blood."
"Yep, ole bloody-tooth Damien has gotten too big for his werewolf britches. Ever since he and his pack took over The Peak and nearly made Miss Kitty roadkill. What's 'he thinks he's the king of mountain' up to?"
"Damien and his top lieutenants are planning terror raids. Got that from a reliable source. But," Link's ears twitched, a sign of his nervousness, "rumor has it he's hiring mercenaries, a mutant werewolf pack."
Zance chilled with 'psi-knowing', and his hackles raised painfully. "Mutants?"
"According to Sergei they look like a cross between a Hollywood werewolf mated to one of those cryptid goat suckers."
"Chupacabra?"
Mayor Link nodded as if they were only discussing the weather.
"Did Sergei say if his tiger Yakuza boss, Shere Khan, knows anything about these werewolf mutants?"
Lance cracked half a smile. "Sergei said when he reported his sighting, Shere Khan made some Confucius type of joke about summoning the Teenage Mutant Turtles."
"Well hell, grease yer guns, cowpokes. Ain't nothing like a Yakuza varmint with a sense of humor." Zance shook his head at what he was learning.
"Shere Khan has taken his claws out of our fair town for now. Thanks to you and others. But, he's sitting pretty like a fat tick on a lazy bloodhound, just biding his time."
"I reckon that's true." With his thoughts racing, Zance asked, "Talk to Dante about his sire's nefarious plans?"
"No, not yet. Why spoil Dante's grand opening of the supperclub?" Lance glanced around. "A world-class achievement. Me and the misses call it hoop-di-doo elegant."
"World-class is damn right. I ain't been in these razzle-dazzle surroundings for quite a span of time." Zance shot his gaze toward Dante briefly, having caught his scent. He and his lovely Kitty were moony-faced gazing at each other. "Yeah, why spoil his romantic evening? It'll hold."
"Good evening, White Fang, Ms. Pasha. Happy New Year," Mayor Link intoned in his official, I'm-your-friend voice.
"Happy New Year, Mayor, Zance." The super wolf and his cat goddess paramour echoed each other's words.
"You two boys are looking particularly serious," White Fang continued. "Something I need to know about?"
"Are you here with your reporter's hat on?" Lance demanded, his tenor still oily with friendliness.
Zance watched White Fang's small grin form. "It's off for this evening, Mayor. But, don't tell Nick. I have him fooled into believing I'm always investigating the next story."
Mayor Link rolled his eyes to the left, but didn't move his head. "Nick's already eyeballing us from clear across that half-a-football-field sized dance floor." Lance's brow wrinkled like a chimp as he whispered, "And with his extra sharp hearing..."
When the Mayor's words faded, White Fang's deep blue eyes subtly twinkled with humor. "Nick's werewolf nose for news is telling him, 'Flash! Front-page headline'. Quickly followed by 'every copy sold'."
"No worries, gentlemen." Pasha slinked closer to White Fang, resting her hip against him. "Ziva has Nick by the collar, and she's whispering naughty promises in his ear." She spoke in her slow sultry voice, the one that always riled Zance to hot and ready.
But no more. That was reserved for Sherilyn.
"You're surely right, Ms. Pasha." Zance gave her a wink. "Nick is followin' Ziva now, and lookin' like a stud on a short leash."
"Like I was telling Zance, rumor is..." Mayor Link began.
"Tell you what, fellas, Ms. Pasha," Zance interrupted. "I'm itchy as a flea-bitten mutt to get back to my mate. Mayor, me and Dontoya will back you up. White Fang, ole buddy, we'll be attendin' the get-ready meetings like always."
"Congratulations to you and Dontoya on being mated," White Fang offered, his tone genuine.
"Yes, congratulations, and blessed be your union." Pasha glowed, and with his psi-eyes, Zance observed her golden essence whirl, then surround him.
He gave her a slight nod of thanks.
"Your mate, she is Ubarion, is she not?" Pasha smiled, the Egyptian cat goddess who captured any canary she wanted.
Zance answered with a lopsided grin. Figuring the Ubarion cat was now out the bag anyway, and a cat goddess would know the truth, he drawled, "Close enough, Ms. Pasha. But we're keeping it under our hats."
"Of course," Pasha met his gaze squarely, and Zance witnessed the strength of her sacred force. "I will not speak of it. However, if your mate would care to know more about her heritage, I will happily speak with her."
"Enjoy the evenin'." Zance spun on his heel, and like an eagerly panting stud, he strode toward Sherilyn.
Why should Donny-cat get her exclusive company tonight of all nights? Mentally growling, Zance quickened his pace to a near trot.
Dammit! What did that beta, Mooney, want? Zance curled his lips in a silent snarl as Mooney waved him over, then moved like a linebacker to intercept him.
Was the beta werewolf sniffin' for a story? Could be, since Mooney and Nick, the editor of the G&B Gazette, were brothers, and the beta had been the newspaper's sports writer.
Zance couldn't recall if the siblings were still on the fang-ripping outs with each other. Not wanting to make a stir at the supperclub, he reluctantly slowed his steps.
Where was Mooney's dang, good-looking little mate with the blue hair? Marissa, that was her name. Yep, that sweet human witch surely kept Mooney on love's leash.
Zance took advantage when a passing waiter presented a tray holding glasses of bourbon straight up. At least, his usual good luck showed, and right on time, even if he was missin' time with his precious Sherilyn.
Waiting for Mooney to charge through a group of vampires, dressed impeccably in tuxedos, Zance took a healthy swallow. He savored the mellow tempest of flavors as the bourbon slid down his throat.
That was Dante for ya. Always the best whenever he could get his paws on it.
"Reach for the ceiling," Zance muttered about his eyebrows as they raised high. The werewolf's playboy-handsome mug was contorted by an urgent expression, and his eyes shone darker than normal.
"What's stickin' between your fangs, Mooney ole son?"
Her Midnight Stardust Cowboys ~ Snowball Fight
Zance enjoying the snow in his wolf form.
Tuesday, last day of July, howls and yowls, shapeshifter lovers.
Yesterday was wacky-busy, and despite my best plans time ran out to write a flash scene.
Currently I'm penning the final chapters of my WIP, now over 75,000 words. It's been beastly hot for the last several weeks so when I was looking at adding another sex/passion/love scene -- because that's how the story flowed -- for the sake of my sanity, I decided to start with a snowball fight between my heroine, Sherilyn, and her two shapeshifting cowboys, Dontoya, a black cougar, and Zance, a timber wolf.
This works perfectly because it's wintertime in Talbot's Peak, and just before New Year's Eve.
***This scene is 'unedited' and X-Rated.***
Her Midnight Stardust Cowboys
Chapter Fifty-Eight
Sherilyn shrieked in protest and delight as Zance's snowball smacked the back of her head. She barely felt it, given her cowboys had bundled her up within an inch of her life.
Good gawd, she was having fun. The late afternoon sun sparkled like crystalline dust on the blanket of new snow, and for now, the horror movie events of last night faded into the background.
She swerved on instinct, and another snowball sailed past her. Joy fizzed inside Sherilyn as if she'd drank several cherry phosphates, the soda fountain treat she and her grammy Louisa had always shared together.
"We got her on the run." Zance whooped.
"No fair!" Sherilyn hollered. "Two against one."
"You've been whuppin' our asses, darlin'."
Dontoya's lightly packed snowball smashed against her arm. Almost knee deep in snow, Sherilyn plowed her way through trying to run for a shallower area between two high drifts.
She needed a fresh supply of the white wet stuff to keep pummeling her dogged pursuers. Or, was that a dogged and a catted pursuer?
For a while Zance and Dontoya had taken turns being on her side during their spontaneous snowball fight. Her good aim had gotten her into trouble, plus her fast reflexes. So many of her snowballs hit their handsome faces, they'd finally ganged up on her.
Huffing and puffing, Sherilyn halted between the two large drifts. Scooping up the new fallen snow, she quickly formed her weapon. With a twist of her body, she hurled it at Dontoya, who led the charge.
"Damn, woman, right between my eyes." Dontoya stopped in his tracks, and grabbed up a handful of snow.
"Where'd you learn to throw like that?" Zance demanded, after dodging her snowball enough so it glanced off his cheek.
"Lots of boys in my neighborhood." Sherilyn packed more snow between her gloved palms. "It was either learn how to fight back. Or go home crying like a girl."
Just in time, Sherilyn angled herself so Dontoya's small snowball smooshed against her shoulder instead of her head. "Missed," she taunted.
"You sure ain't crying like a girl." Zance split off from Dontoya, obviously intending to ambush her from behind.
"One time of having cold snow rubbed in my face woke up my inner warrior goddess." Rearing back, Sherilyn aimed for Dontoya's kisser, then ducked the snowball Zance fired at the back of her head.
"Dang it, Z-dog, your magic juice is working too well on our mate. She's turned into a super woman." Dontoya dived into a bank of snow. Rolling, he grabbed a huge handful of snow, and began rapidly shaping his snowball.
"Someone's going to have to teach her who the bosses are."
Zance charged toward her, his progress hindered by the waist-high snowdrift. Sherilyn would have laughed at the comical picture he made, pumping his legs and leaping, his arms flying about, if she hadn't been madly packing snow.
"Oh yeah, bad ass wolf." Sherilyn pelted him with two of her crudely made snowballs.
Stepping back, she prepared to flee even as she whipped her head around to locate Dontoya. With his snowball about hit her square in the jaw, Sherilyn jerked her face out of the way.
Suddenly off balance, she stumbled backward. About to regain her balance, her feet caught, then tangled because of her too-large boots. "Oh, no," she moaned.
Sherilyn struggled to untangle her feet as she toppled backward, but she was crap out of luck.
"Got her now," Zance shouted with male glee.
"Got her," Dontoya's low purr entered Sherilyn's ear.
The next instant, his powerful arms captured her, preventing her fall. He steadied her against his braced legs, and Sherilyn started to melt against him.
"Why hell, cougar cowboy, you might as well be a hot burning stove. But this cowgirl doesn't give up the fight that easily."
"She doesn't?" Dontoya growled sexy as you please.
"No." Sherilyn twisted back and forth like a madwoman, attempting to wiggle out his hold.
"Got a wild scratchin' kitten, pardner. Give me some help here."
"She's a wild one alright."
Zance's whip-hard body nearly slammed into her backside. God, he felt sinfully delicious as he trapped her between himself and Dontoya.
Before Sherilyn knew it, her cowboys hauled her downward. They landed together on the cold softness of the snowdrift. Zance and Dontoya piled on top of her instantly, caging her between them.
Damn, oh double cowboy damn. Nothing felt better than being Dontoya and Zance's captive.
"Time for some teachin'," Zance huskily drawled.
"Looks like I'm at your mercy, you big bad wolf." Sherilyn hesitated, clamping her lips against the natural followup. But the question won out. "Are you going to eat me?"
Zance's eyes glittered a feral gold, and with a possessive growl, he dived his un-gloved hand between her thighs. His bold claim of her sex mound, and the friction of her jeans, did tingly-wicked things to Sherilyn's insides.
"Is the snow melting?" she breathy-asked.
"We can make it melt, sweetheart." Zance kneaded her pussy, the pressure strong and sensual.
Sweltering with desire, Sherilyn moaned, and arched against his palm.
"Nobody around," Dontoya raspy purred. "Why don't we do some meltin'."
He seized her hood, then cupped the top of her head. With his other hand, Dontoya unzipped her parka just enough to caress her breast. He'd removed his glove, and the soft flannel shirt she wore only enhanced the wickedly sweet sensations.
Quickly burning with ferocious need, Sherilyn burst out, "You two are lighting my internal fires..."
Zance nipped her lips with his before she finished speaking -- tiny quick nips that warmed their mouths fast and were driving her crazy with passion. Sherilyn tried to kiss, to nibble his lips in return, but her man-wolf ruled without compromise. Not that she could complain, given pleasure swamped her.
All the while, Dontoya pinched and plucked her flannel-covered, pebbled nipple, his rhythm deliberate. Sherilyn surrendered to the steamy need blasting through her.
Unable to do anything else, she writhed against her two hard-bodied cowboys. Zance and Dontoya kept her trapped, their thighs on top of hers, and she loved it.
Sex heaven, Sherilyn thought, I must be in sexual heaven. For real.
Dontoya stroked his hand over her belly, the movement unzipping her parka. With slow finesse, he unsnapped her jeans, and Sherilyn's clit did a little twisty dance of anticipation.
Zance lifted his head, deserting her lips. "Dang, sweetheart. I felt that big bud of yours. Just beggin' for my attention."
Dontoya slid the zipper of her jeans down, even as Zance continued fondling her pussy mound. Sherilyn cried out, and bucked as much as she could against Zance's hand.
"Let's get these jeans pulled down some." Zance raised upward fast, and as Dontoya removed his thigh from hers, he straddled her legs. "I want to do some big bad wolf eatin' on that tasty pussy of yours."
Lightning seemed to streak along the length of her clit, and Sherilyn's eyes shot open. "Oh. My. Gawd."
Zance gripped the waistband of her jeans, and nearly jerked them over her hips.
Sherilyn heaved breaths, wanton from having her sex exposed, from the feeling of her thighs captured tightly by her jeans.
"Aren't your hands going to freeze?" she managed to utter, as Zance slid his palms beneath her bare ass.
"Darlin', I'm putting gloves beneath his hands." Dontoya's husky purr traveled through Sherilyn's middle, teasing her sex lips.
Zance lifted her butt enough so the gloves could be placed, then gripped her cheeks deliciously hard. The next moment, she felt Dontoya unbutton her shirt, his touch smooth but quick.
His icy mouth claimed her nipple, and Sherilyn keened a cry of surprise. The blissful burn as he sucked and tugged, his hand molding her breast...Sherilyn drowned in the ecstasy of it, and went limp.
Zance strongly nuzzled the cleft of her pussy. When he penetrated her slit with his tongue, and slipped the point back and forth over her swollen clit, Sherilyn helplessly whimpered.
Already out of her mind with pleasure, she succumbed to even more as Zance pushed his lips deeper. He nibbled with his lips and lightly nipped with his teeth, his alpha possessiveness obvious.
"Zance, Dontoya," she gasped, trembling with bliss inside.
