Retro post: The Magnificent Seven
Time got away from me this week. Between shoveling massive amounts of snow and dealing with a huge freelance assignment on a tight deadline, I had no time to come up with a new blog. So you're getting a rerun this week.
However -- I'm working on another continued storyline, a la Love to the Rescue. I want to start with some prologue posts to introduce the players, since some of them haven't been seen for a while. This bunch, who debuted over a year ago, play prominent roles in the story. Buckle in, spanky, the road's liable to get bumpy ahead.
# # #
The old school bus rolled up the interstate and crossed into Montana at speeds at odds with its shabby appearance. Inside it had been refurbished into a mobile transport with generous living accommodations, and more defenses than one would expect from its faded yellow exterior.
Like the bus, its passengers were more than their outward appearance suggested. There were seven of them.
The casual observer’s attention is almost always drawn first to the leopard. Though only of average height, he’s generously muscled and uncommonly handsome. He has a habit of staring down others, as if constantly assessing how their flesh might taste.
Surely one so powerful in body and personality must be the one in charge. You might think that. You’d be wrong. Watch closely, and you’ll see him defer to the diminutive woman with the striking black-and-white hair. Cool, quick-witted, quicker still in flight, the gyrfalcon leads this team. Her keen eyes miss nothing. She has commanded these commandos for five years now. Under her watch, they’ve never failed.
The two wolves are the trackers of the group. They’re so similar in appearance and personality, as alike as twins, that it’s hard to credit they’re from separate packs. The male counts coyote blood among his ancestry; the female boasts of fox. These genetic combinations make them more imaginative than the average wolf. It also makes them reckless, and dangerous. Only their respect for the gyrfalcon keeps their wilder impulses in check.
The owl is their tech man. There isn’t a system on the planet he can’t crack, no computer program he can’t hack. He likes to fiddle with random electronic devices just to see what new inventions he can come up with. He once fashioned a Taser from a garage-door opener and a TV remote. As a boy he’d had two posters on his bedroom wall: Nikola Tesla and MacGyver.
Out of the seven, most people instinctively recoil from the crocodile. He honestly can’t understand this. He’s an Australian freshwater croc, mild-mannered and a trained botanist. What the owl is to gadgets, the freshie is to plants. He can whip up a poultice or a poison with equal ease, as the situation demands. He’s also a talented cook. The team might eye their dishes sidelong, but the falcon trusts him. That’s all the others need.
Except, of course, for the assassin.
The team’s hired killer trusts no one, not even the falcon. He’s an English Dorset sheep, and quite psychotic. The others don’t particularly care for him. The sheep is fine with that. Raised as prey in a world run by predators, he developed a philosophy of “get them before they get you.” When it comes to getting people, the sheep can be quite inventive. He doesn’t partake of the freshie’s meals, preferring to prepare his own food. He doesn’t sleep much, or soundly, and often bleats wild unexpected laughter.
Given a choice, the gyrfalcon would not have had him or any assassin on her team. But she hadn’t been given a choice. Their orders had been depressingly specific. “Infiltrate Talbot’s Peak,” their master said. “Become friendly with its people. Learn its secrets. Here is the list of people I wish you to pay particular attention to. When the time is right, I shall contact you with further instructions.”
That time is nearly here. Lives will change. And end.

Cue the Ominous Music
Barry peered out the car window, his voice high and jittery. “Oh Jesus. They’ve spotted us.”
“No shit.” Atcheson cursed under his breath. Of course every eye of every shifter in Talbot’s Peak was now trained directly on them. These were shifters, monsters, inhumans. Naturally they’d be suspicious if a cop car cruised into town and parked in the center square. They’d be doubly wary of anyone who got out of it, especially if those passengers were human. Any element of surprise they’d been hoping for had just vanished like a puff of smoke from one of Barry’s joints.
No way Atcheson was taking the blame for this. They’d lost both the van and Cochrane's Chevy. The cop car, probably the least inconspicuous vehicle ever devised, had been the only thing available. What were they supposed to do?
Roll with the punches, his daddy always said. If possible, throw the first punch yourself.
Atcheson got out from behind the wheel for a look around. Barry and Lowenstein piled out like clowns from a circus car. Atcheson found the analogy depressingly apt. Ted grunted and groaned and finally squeezed himself loose with an assist from Lowenstein. “What now?” he panted. “We gonna eat or what?”
The townsfolk gave them the hairy eyeball—talk about your apt—but no one approached them or challenged them. All in all, life in the square seemed remarkably calm. “Cochrane’s not here yet,” Atcheson deduced. “We couldn’t have passed him. He must have gone straight to the bar.”
“So we hit the bar?” Lowenstein asked.
“Yeah. Set a trap. Catch him when he gets there.” Atcheson turned around to address his team, just like a real leader should. “Remember, he’s a werewolf now. A monster. He’d want us to off him. If he could, I’ll bet he’d—oh Jesus Christ!”
“Mphf?” Ted said. After some effort he’d freed a squished Snickers bar from his back pocket. He’d already peeled back the wrapper and was munching on it right in front of Atcheson, so close Atcheson could smell the toxic combo of caramel, peanut and chocolate.
Dear God, was he insane? Or out to kill the team’s new, untried leader?
Atcheson smacked the candy bar out of Ted’s blubbery hand. “What the hell’s the matter with you?”
“M’hungry, man,” Ted mumbled. He looked hurt.
Now Barry and Lowenstein were looking at him funny. Get a grip, Atcheson ordered himself. He couldn’t afford to lose their support, not yet. “Okay, then. You stay here. Keep an eye out for Cochrane. If you spot him, call us. We’re going on to the bar.”
“But—”
“That’s an order, mister.” Atcheson clambered back into the cop car. Was his hand burning? Were those hives? No, couldn’t be. Must be his imagination.
# # #
Ted had no time to wedge himself back into the car. Atcheson barely gave Barry and Lowenstein a chance to get in before he peeled out of the square. Within seconds the cop car was a cloud of dust with flashing blue lights. Belatedly, Ted shot it the finger.
He looked around for his Snickers, but a crow had already flown off with it. So much for breakfast.
Hold on. His gaze hit a place across the square. The sign said Bighorn Diner. Now that looked promising. He lumbered over and was welcomed by the seductive aromas of fried eggs and maple syrup. A sign in the window promised Flapjack Special -- All You Can Eat $4.99. All of a sudden the day appeared much brighter.
Screw the team. Screw Cochrane. Screw hunting shapeshifters. What had shapeshifters ever done to anybody anyway? Ted opened the diner door and went inside.
He was the lucky one.
# # #
Among those handing out the stink eyes to Atcheson and his team was a knot of young men on a bench by the town’s dog dish fountain. They were, in fact, wolves. They wore leather jackets and tight jeans and motorcycle boots and dark expressions. Since the Twilight movies came out, they had started dressing in shirtless Ts, or going shirtless entirely.
To be specific, they were Hancock wolves, sworn to Damien Hancock. Their orders were simple: keep an eye out for strangers, humans, and any other beings who wouldn’t be missed. Morloxian was constantly running short of subjects for his ghastly experiments. If he couldn’t get humans he might start using shifters. This tended to spike motivation.
They spoke among themselves in growls and body language, indecipherable to ignorant humans. Monkeys, one said. The others nodded agreement. Hunters, said another. More nods.
The leader of the little pack grinned. Twofer. He jerked his chin at the wolf beside him. The low-rank leaped up to get the truck.
They let the fat one lurch across the square and enter the Bighorn Diner. His heart was probably three beats away from imploding. He’d never survive the trip to the lab, let alone the mutation process. The low-rank returned with their vehicle, a former bread truck that now said Full Moon Deliveries on the side.
The leader got behind the wheel. By now they’d lost sight of the cop car, but that was okay. The apes had been chattering loud enough to be heard clear back to the exit. The big blond ape had said, “the bar,” and there was only one bar at the end of that particular road. Hell, the mutts out there would give them a medal for saving their business from hunters. He trundled the bread truck out of the square.

Can One Plus Two Equal Three?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our cast grows by another person:
Josh Branston (Mixed Mutt Heritage)-He's loved Anthony for almost as long as he's known him. Anthony rescued Josh from life on the streets and brought him into the pack. Due to Josh's mixed heritage and unknown origins, his stature within the pack would be little more than tolerated if he wasn't part of Anthony's extended family and his second in command. Josh has never been jealous of the women in Anthony's life until Tory. Josh wants the passion and tenderness Anthony gave him before a huge part of his heart filled with the one woman Josh finds himself equally attracted to. Can two become three in love?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Josh cracked the pencil he held in two as he slammed it against the bar. “Anthony’s where?”
Two sets of eyes watched as Josh clenched his hands and closed his eyes. His ragged inhales emphasized his muscular chest and biceps. Anyone near him could feel the heat and anger rolling off him. Sally, the evening barkeep, and Rocky, the bouncer, moved back as Josh rose from behind the bar.
“He took off with a woman who fell in the parking lot two days ago. We’ve had a couple of phone calls from him stating he’d be in touch. Said to tell you, he’d text you when he got a chance.” Sally edged her way past Rocky.
“Come on boss,” Rocky started. He shut his mouth and swallowed hard. Josh’s glare and snarl sent blasts of cold air through out the room. “I’m tightening my lips and shutting them.” Rocky backed toward the exit leading to the office hallway and rear door.
“Stand still you two,” Josh ground out. “Why did Anthony talk to you and not me?”
“I can’t say.” Sally shrugged and looked away. “Anthony does what he wants. I don’t ask questions. I get paid to serve drinks and condoms. Rocky gets paid to keep the peace and make sure no one drives drunk.”
“I know what your jobs are. I hired you and made up your job descriptions.” Josh sighed and combed his fingers through his hair. “Get out. Go home. Tomorrow is another day.”
Sally stopped at the doorframe. “Josh, I wish I could help. But, Anthony doesn’t say much. He keeps to himself. You’re the only one he says much too.”
Rocky pointed to the shelves behind the bar. “I found your cell phone unplugged. Dead battery too. It’s charging. I hope you get a text soon.”
Rocky grabbed Sally’s wrist and pulled her through the door.
Josh leaned his elbows on the bar, burying his face in his hands. He blinked, trying to not give into the tears stinging his eyes. Frustration and angst worked intricate knots and lattice arrays in and out of his gut and up into his heart.
Raising his head, he glanced around the bar. N one remained except him. He reached below the bar.
A shot glass and a bottle of 100-year-old scotch appeared on the bar. He waved his hand and spoke. “Pour with ice.”
Two ice cubes filled the glass as the bottle rose. Its cork popped and floated down to the bar. The glass moved across the bar and caught the amber liquid as the bottle titled. Moments later the bottle settled upright next to the cork.
Josh grasped the glass, swirling its contents. He intently studied it as though he could see something. Taking a deep breath, he pressed a finger to the glass and began chanting.
“Show me what I wish to know. Let the one I seek to see know not that I watch and hear all that he does whether far or near.”
Holding the glass at eye level, Josh continuing slowly swirling the ice and scotch as he repeated his chant two more times. On the third repetition, he hissed and set the glass down. “Damn you Anthony. A friggin’ woman. You swore this time it was you and I. Just you and I.”
Josh leaned down as the view of the woman began clearing. Her shoulder length brunette hair and brown eyes belonged to only one female, Tory Griswald. The grace of her milk white shoulders and neck teased at what the rest of her looked like.
Josh grabbed his wrist to keep from flinging the glass against the wall. “He’s with her. The bitch. Why couldn’t he tell me?”
Two loud beeps echoed from the shelves. Josh watched as his hand trembled as he sat the glass down. Turning, he located where his cell phone sat, lighting up each time it beeped.
He unplugged the phone and flipped it open. It showed three text messages waited. The first referenced Anthony’s number. Knowing he shouldn’t give into his growing curiosity, Josh opened the first message.
Hon, I’m sorry about this. Tory needs me. We’ve got some unfinished business to resolve. I’ll call you in a day or two. Love you!
“Right, you love me when it’s convenient.” Josh raised his thumb ready to delete the message when the voice mail icon appeared. What could it hurt to hear what bullshit Anthony had come up with now?
Josh, I wish you’d answer your phone. Damn it stop avoiding me. I can’t explain everything in a 30-second blip. Tory’s hurt and I’m with her. Call me, please.
Josh replayed the message. He counted to ten and hit save message before reading the rest of the text messages from Anthony. A few moments later, Josh downed the contents of the shot glass and re-corked the bottle. He sat it carefully beneath the bar.
He wished Tory no harm. She’d gotten a large chunk of his heart too about the same time Anthony had gotten his portion. Both of them filled his heat though neither knew it. Maybe the time had come to fess up and see if sharing was an option.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whoa talk about a new twist! Josh seems intent on being heard and getting his share. I'm just as curious as you to see where this leads next. Danny also appears to be in trouble and needs to gather patience. Who'll be up next is only known by the muse....she's got something cooking.
Snow fell and the temperatures have gone way cold. Time to light the fire, bundle up with your sweeties, and let the imagination fly.
Have a great weekend!
Gratitude or Assitude?
However, to go with my thought, gratitude or assitude? ~ how can I forget all those romance novel heroines of yesteryear, who were breadcrumb-grateful for anything the hero tossed their way? The story usually came down to this ~
Oh, he loves me. Everything is okay, now, and this is my happily ever after. The End.
Yet, those were the times I grew up in. Everything was made to appear as if it revolved around the man, the husband, the father. He was the breadwinner, the head of the household.
Oh, the little woman had her valued place, see reruns of Leave it to Beaver, for an idealistic example of how the fifties worked in our culture.
Jump forward to the late sixties ~ yep, given women came to resent being treated like second class citizens and were often not cherished by their mates... hey, what fertile ground for women’s liberation!
Now, leap ahead to the new generation of kick-assitude heroines. They abound in our romance novels, as they should. I adore writing my own version of these tough, rough, take-care-business gals. But then, I was a notorious tomboy and, at one time, hated the thought of becoming a woman because it meant I could no longer do those things the boys did, like sports. I loved playing backyard tackle football.
However, I possess a split personality, as I suspect most of us do. I have a deeply feminine side. I want to be cherished, to dance like a fairy ballerina and have a pink-on-pink girly room. Yes, even at my age.
Yep, we’ve come a long way baby... from the helpless romance heroine who had to be grateful that some man had deigned to love her, or had fallen hopelessly in love with her, ala the first Regency romances... to the fierce-assitude heroine who gives life a swift kick in the rear if it doesn’t cooperate with her, who saves the world, the galaxy... who often calls the sexual shots and may or may not give into love.
On a personal note, I find it fascinating all the different directions writers have taken with their romance heroines, all the ways they are exploring their individual heroine’s personality. To simplify, from sweet-natured and submissive to a super-strong woman with alpha-assitude, and every type of heroine in between.
How does this relate to shapeshifters? The shifter heroine not only has her woman self, but she has her animal nature, or her other various paranormal beings *such as vampire* ~ as well. How she integrates every facet of herself, or doesn’t, makes for a complex heroine, whose motivations and feelings are not only human. No, not anymore. The romance novel has become an all-inclusive universe for our heroines.
So, how do you ‘grow’ your shapeshifter heroine? From gratitude to assitude?
As a reader what are your fave shapeshifter heroines?
For now, Darius, my bull shifter, has decided to voice his thoughts.
New Bull in Town ~ Darius Speaks
THIRTY-ONE
“Shelley,” I bellow, then listen to the sound bounce off trees and wave through the air. Yeah, I like hearing my own bovine voice. Though, now, it’s an instant of pitiful relief. Snorting my fury, I trot toward the treeline, close to where I’ve parked my pickup.
I halt on the rise of ground and look over the area before concentrating on my shift. It doesn’t do to be in this raging state. I could end up with my human head and butt on my bull body. Or, vice versa, I could end up with a bull head and tail on my human body.
THIRTY-TWO
Yep, where do you think the inspiration for all those Minotaur statues came from? Another little secret. Some of the ladies liked it that way, especially at the wine festivals. *Insert your own imagination here*
The worst I’ve experienced is the weight of my bull self on my human hands and feet. Try that one out, those of you who yen to be animal shifters. It’s not all glamor and running-wild adventure being a shapeshifting bull. Still, you won’t hear any complaints from me.
Calming my mind *meditation does work*, I monitor my rutting hormones until I can shift. It happens quickly, smoothly and soon I’m pulling on my boots.
Here I come, Shelley.
Here’s a beginning snippet and if you’d like to read the whole scene click on over to HAPPILY EVER AFTER for my blog ~ Romance and Rooms ~ It’s the open road. It’s the sky. It’s the galaxy.
Sedona felt like a temptress as she leaned forward and hugged Volcano tightly. The shape of his super-cycle seduced her bare thighs while the black celestial leather of his jacket wickedly teased her naked breasts. Somehow the carnal cherub had convinced her to go skinny dipping in the sky.
NINETEEN
Before I can’t speak at all, I manage, “I don’t even know your name.”
Then, it hits me, yeah sorta pun intended, like a baseball bat to the head. “Your name isn’t Bull Durham, is it?”
That sends him back an inch, his too-handsome face, that is. Not his bat-like smoldering cock. No, it’s permanently attached its pulsing length to my hip.
‘Swing, batter, swing’ throbs through my head. Oh, god. Where’s Susan Sarandon? She could distract him with that *show off my ankles* full-skirt, with her Southern sultry *I’m available* gaze.
“You don’t look like Susan Sarandon,” he rasps.
TWENTY
The span of his hands settles more firmly around my waist. “You’re much sexier, Shelley. Your brand is much hotter on this bull.”
His thumbs slip beneath my tank top, searing my flesh, yet feeling strangely cool at the same time. “Ever play baseball?” I croak.
“My name is Darius.” His thumbs tease a tiny swathe over my belly while his fingertips stroke the small of my back, certain of my seduction. “I’ll wait for a full introduction, once we’re inside. Once I’ve kissed those sex-kitten lips of yours.”
“Shouldn’t that be bossie-the-cow lips?” I stare at his sin-tempting mouth.
"I slowly reach for the hammer..."
My goodness, the time slips madly away while my brain spins like... well, let’s see... how about with cyclonic force?
Yep, Independence Day is looming... and the fireworks are definitely happening in my current WIP ~ BRANDED BY THE TEXANS ~ not a shapeshifter tale, yet with lots of animals... horses, cattle, Dillon’s wolf hybrid dogs and a Maine Coon Cat, who is Dono’s pet. And, wildcats. A lot of them are half-breeds, domestic cats mating with Bobcats or Jaguarondis.
Sorry, off topic... my mind is a kaleidoscope of images and info at the moment. It’s been that kind of day, even though it started out in a nice organized way.
So, what would you do? If that handsome *bad boy* cowboy you refused to dance with the night before, is now standing naked before you, having shifted from being a longhorn bull?
~~~

EIGHT
His gaze steamed like a cup of fresh hot coffee, then followed the length of my arm as I continued inching my hand toward the hammer.
“I’ll have to shift into a bull,” he croons like a seducing Lothario.
Crap! Why does his voice have to ring the chimes of my sex hormones?
“Good. You just do that. I’ll put a ring in your nose–“
His hand captures my wrist, interrupting my words. His hold is gentle, yet firm, and it feels way too good.
“Shelley, get to know me and I’ll let you put a ring wherever you want.”
NINE
“Typical male,” I accuse. “You’ll lie like a dirty dog. Or, in you’re case, a dirty longhorn, just to aim at my bull’s eye.”
I give him the fierce *don’t mess with me* eye as his gaze fully meets mine. Did I say steaming coffee before. Hell, his eyes are downright boiling for me.
Damn... something else boiled against me and it wasn’t his hand around my wrist. His cock brushed, then rested lightly against my hip. I gulp. It has to be the hottest largest hunk o’ beef I’ve ever felt, and its burning its way through my jeans.

"What the hell are you?"

Yep, I bet a lot of merely human heroines and heroes have asked that question when confronted with the reality that their lover or protector is obviously NOT merely human, but partly a beast of some type and species ~ as Shelley, my heroine, did last Tuesday.
Greetings from ShapeShifter-landia. Since I find promo-ing no fun at all, at least most of the time, I’ve thrown aside any attempt to appear like a professional author.
Instead, for today’s bloggie, I’m continuing my Serial X-Flash.

“Shelley, why don’t I explain inside –“
“No!” I glare my wrath. “You’ll explain here and now. Or I’m reaching for that hammer and using it to pound –“
“I get the picture,” he interrupted, flinching just a tad. His gaze remained steady, though, and rampaged for me.
“It’s not my fault you’re standing here in your birthday suit.” Slamming my fists against my hips, I lean forward thrusting my chin.
“Yes, it is”
“It is not.”
“You refused to dance with me, pretty woman.”
“So, you... you turn into a bull to get revenge?” My temper had come to the rescue.
SIX
“Not revenge, Shelley. I have to shift to my bull form to stay healthy.”
I stare into his dark glittering eyes, assessing his truthfulness. “Yeah, you were just in the prairie neighborhood, right?”
He grins, such a wickedly satisfied grin, I scowl. Yep, I’m about ready to swing for his jaw no matter how handsome his features are.
“You know you can’t resist me, pretty woman.”
Okay, his bull-gravelly voice is messing with my sex hormones. “I did last night.”
“I must have frightened you. I’m sorry, Shelley.”
My cheeks burn. “Gee, being a damn bull isn’t frightening, is it?”
