A Day in the Life of an Alpha...

 I swear, there are only two women who would get away with speaking to Nick this way, but I have yet to see him interact with his mother...

I'm betting there are three.  :)

Have a wonderful weekend!

~~~
Nick growled as he clicked on the funny family foto, Ziva had decided on this week.  It was a picture of him, protecting a bit of fluff from the unfriendly furry’s at the Talbot’s Peak humane society.  His association with the group was suppose to be kept on the DL to protect his grumbly nature.
He’d worked hard over the years to make those around him think he was just an asshole alpha.  It wouldn’t do anyone any good to think otherwise.  Hell, even Ziva questioned his attitude on more occasions than not…it was how it should be.  He had family to protect, pack to protect, employees to protect…what good would he be if everyone thought him a weak-assed beta.
“ZIVA!”  The newsroom buzz dropped to church quiet as he bellowed for his about to get her ass paddled employee.  The bunch of gossiping pains in the ass could all use a good scare to keep them in line and out of his f’ing business.
“Now-now, Nick,” chastised his colorful assistant as she entered his office.
“You’re not the one in trouble—this time, Penny,” Nick groused, digging through the pile of rulers Ziva insisted on leaving on his desk.  Well wasn’t she going to be oh-so glad to see, or feel them rather, on the soft white skin of her ass?  “Damn it!”  Great, now he was getting hard—f’ing wood.
“All of you get back to work—go on now, get.”  The door slammed with less force then he usually gave it, but more determination.  Penny was pissed at him, again.
“Just get me Ziva, Penny.  Right n…”
“Enough, Nicolas McMahon!  You are disrupting the office.  I have a big night tonight and need to focus my mind—your tantrum is not helping that process.”  Her angry voice squawked and her hand hit his desk with a loud wallop.  “Do not call me Penny, you have not earned the right to that name—yet.”
“Pen…”  Nick stopped talking as her look nearly shriveled his balls.  He and Penny enjoyed the give and take in their boss and employee relationship, but right now, she was quite serious.
“You must try to reign in this over the top alpha act, Nick.  I know you exaggerate it, but for the sake of those around you ease up a bit or there will be no one left to play alpha to.  Now, as for Z, she is not here at the moment.  There was something about purple fairies and naked pictures.”
“What?”  No way, after the last conversation they’d had about those damn pictures, would she really still be looking into them?  Yeah, she would.
“Mmmm…I really can’t wait to hear that story.  Now, put the ruler away and let’s keep it down in here.”  Penny opened the door and prepared to leave him, alone again with that damn picture.
“Excuse me?”  He’d been pushed as far as he’d allow from his employee and friend, now it was time to get back to business.
“By the way, I love the family foto…just tell me this, you didn’t eat the poor little kitty, did you?”
Kandy Apple and Her Hellhounds ~ In Print for Halloween ~
It is the season of the witch, the season for my shapeshifting hellhounds, Zin and Zol.
Halloween is already reaching out with foggy entrapping tendrils. Yes, I can feel it, which is one reason I wrote my witch erotic romance, Kandy Apple and Her Hellhounds, and currently have several Samhain-inspired WIPs.
My love affair with witches began with Samantha from the original TV series, Bewitched. Oh yes, I coveted her powers. After all, what fun-excitement that would be! A snap of your fingers and your room is clean, the chores done. A twitch of your nose and there’s the dress of your dreams.
You could right every wrong. Help others. Oh, the power was a heady fantasy.
However, more than her witchly magick, I simply adored who the character, Samantha, was as a woman -- the exception being whenever she cowtowed to her husband, typical for that time period.
And, yes, I even learned how to twitch my nose. Of course, not nearly as wonderfully as the actress, Elizabeth Montgomery, who played the beautiful real witch.
To be honest, despite all the Halloween ad hype I grew up with as a kid in the fifties -- where witches were portrayed as ugly evil creatures, often covered by warts because they handled frogs -- ya know what, I never bought into that view of witches.
I thought it was kinda ridiculous. Silly, even boring. No, some part of me never did believe or get onboard with that horror-spooky, broomstick ride. The only witch who ever spooked me as a kid was the Wicked Witch of the West in the “Wizard of Oz”.
Once the ‘beautiful witch’ arrived on the cultural scene... then when I learned about witches as women of the craft -- women who performed magickal rituals in accordance with nature to bring about a desired result -- well, I tingled. I resonated. And, I knew.
In that deep still part of me I knew, and that’s what rang true.
So, of course, it became irresistible -- the urge to write my own real witch heroine, my Kandy Apple. Yes, that’s her nickname, especially around Halloween. She adores wearing red, and has a riotous mane of red hair.
Here’s the scene where Kandace meets the Hellhounds, Zin and Zol.
Excerpt ~
Determined to ignore the heebie-jeebies, she gave her hair a toss. Kandace knew they weren’t fully human. What they were, she hadn’t discovered, so far. She stayed out of their social orbit and kept her distance.
Oh, she’d made discreet inquiries, all right. However, whoever she gabbed with would end up smirking, then give her that knowing look. Yeah, right, she wanted to jump the twins’ Remington Steele-elegant bones.
Okay, true, the old TV show, starring Pierce Brosnan, remained one of her guilty pleasures. Kandace dipped her tongue tip in her drink, scooping out a taste. Maybe if she knew what freakin’ dimension, planet, whatever, the Alien Tuxedo Twins hailed from she’d be interested in one of them. Maybe.
The only reason she inquired about the women in their lives was so she could politely interrogate them. However, Zol and Zin, as they were known, had been exceptionally discreet in their conquests. It’d been like pulling hen’s teeth with slick pliers—still, Kandace had gathered five names.
She’d made it a priority to speak with those women. Not one of them revealed anything of any consequence, and the dreamy smiles on their faces had quickly become too annoying. Even when she’d performed a gentle exploration of the women’s minds—nothing, except the sound of satisfied moans. Whoever the two peas in a pod were, they had the ability to keep an individual’s memory shielded, or some power she didn’t comprehend.
As Kandace admitted to whoever asked, she considered Zol and Zin to be living works of art. Whenever she caught sight of them at various artists’ events, a swoony thrill always raced her heart. Yep, fantastic to look at and admire, but that’s all.
Now, though, she had a whole new problem, other than keeping herself safe from the roaming security teams. The Alien Tuxedo Twins had been able to see her, despite her invisibility shield.
True, they didn’t seem overly eager to make her aware they knew about her witchy ability. Still, who the hell were they? What were they?
And did she need to be afraid of them?
To that end, Kandace sauntered ever closer.
“Might as well face the bad guys, if they are, and get it over with.” She whispered the words against the rim of her glass. Taking a sip, Kandace decided against an exploratory thought-form.
If they could see past her magic, they could probably stop her psi search of their minds, and would know she was onto their paranormal abilities.
Kandace strolled before some artist’s attempt to fuse Picasso’s style with the voluptuous fantasy art of Boris Vallejo. Blinking several times, she stared at the horror of high strangeness.
The twin wearing the evening suit sidled next to her as if he merely examined the painting.
“Definitely not my cup of artistic tea,” she commented. “What do you think?”
“I think I’d rather get to know a spooky little girl like you.”
Kandace jumped inside, startled by his bold come-on. “Spooky. Isn’t that a song lyric?”
From the corner of her eye, she watched the other twin join them. Uh-oh, she’d just become the filling for a man sandwich. At least, they appeared to be men, given those high-rise bulges they both sported.
For her?
Certainly, they smelled like real men. Despite the expensive cologne that clung subtly to both of them, their virility slammed into her nostrils and reminded her a bit of her uncle’s Rottweiler dogs.
Damn! No wonder some women fell in a drooling heap at their well-shod feet.
Kandace tipped up a large swallow of her drink. Her throat had suddenly become a desert, and her traitorous hormones began to beg.
Okay, she was a witch. She could handle this. Whatever this exactly was.
“Yes, it is a song lyric. Shall I sing the tune for you?”
Mr. Evening Suit asked in the smoothest yet sexiest voice she’d heard since Cary Grant. Kandace knew because her sister had watched all of the suave actor’s movies during her girlhood crush on him.
Intrigued by what he would actually do, Kandace flirtatiously angled her shoulders toward him. “Please.”
“In the cool of the evening,” he crooned, “when everything is getting kind of groovy, I call you up and ask you if you want to go and see a movie.”
Geez and tease her, Mr. Evening Suit’s sun-bronzed features were classically handsome, even more so, up this close and personal. Kandace avoided looking at his slightly wavy dark hair, perfectly groomed, of course. She had a thing when it came to a man’s hair. She wanted to wildly run her fingers through and not stop.
“First you say no,” the other twin sang, smooth as velvet, “you've got some plans for the night, and then you stop, and say, all right.”
Kandace did make a tactical error, though. She met his gaze, instantly losing herself in his coffee-colored eyes, illumined by flame. So it appeared.
“Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you,” they sang in stereo.
Feeling halfway seduced, Kandace saluted with her glass. “That’s good. But a girl can only take so much from a pair of womanizers like you.”
“Womanizer?” the Tuxedo Twin inquired. “Do you mean as in a libertine or wolf?”
“Exactly. Quaint reference, libertine. You two aren’t time travelers, are you?” Kandace hoped her voice sounded lighthearted, joking. It was hard to tell, given their mighty testosterone effect on her.
For a brief moment, they glanced at each other, easy to do since they towered above her. Tiny golden vibrations emanated from their foreheads and Kandace wondered exactly how telepathic they were.
“We’re not time travelers by common definition,” the evening suit twin answered.
“But, you do travel through time,” Kandace persisted. Why not? If they knew about her, why shouldn’t she know about them?
She took a nervous sip, but hardly tasted her drink.
Again, the twins trained their gazes on each other for a bare instant.
“We have. However, not by our own power, little witch.” Mr. Tuxedo’s sexy croon had her shifting toward him.
“Witch. You say that as if you believe I am an actual witch.”
Probably not smart, calling them out so soon, especially when I’m sandwiched between them. And just how did they time travel? Kandace frowned mentally.
“You are.” They spoke as one, freaking her out and tingling her spine. It felt like a tray of ice cubes slid down it.
Blurb ~
Kandace doesn’t know why she’s a real witch. Despite her powers, she can’t find her bio parents. When the Tuxedo Twins tempt her with knowledge about her heritage at a charity event, Kandace agrees to dance with the mysterious Supernaturals. Unexpectedly, they are threatened by the omnipresent evil she’s been warned about in her dreams. To keep from being enslaved, Kandace brings forth her greater magick. But, to save her homeworld, she needs her hellhounds.
Zolivar and Zindale, two of Hades’ most mission-accomplished Hellhounds, see a witch sliding down the bannister after her heist of a painting. Spellbound, they know they’ve found just the right Kandy Apple to lick for Halloween. With every passion, Zin and Zol woo their chosen witch. Yet, will their Triad mate stay once she learns they can’t fall in love like humans? Or, will she return to her homeworld? Their very lives are at stake.
Campfire Stories for Shifters
“We want a ghost story!”
“Yeah! Ghost story! Ghost story!”
Sandra sighed happily as the now sugar-wired cubs stared across the camp fire at Kevin. Poor thing; he looked more like a deer caught in headlights than a big, dominant mountain lion right now. That ought to teach him to mach a lady’s shoes. What a great idea it had been to come on this camping trip, but not for the expected reason. Nothing about her fellow campers was expected, including their species!
The first night had been a bit odd. The moms and kids had welcomed her presence better than that sexy young camp counselor had, that was for certain. They had been a little reserved at first but warmed to her. She, for her part, was finally glad of having spent 20 years trying to fit in with a crowd she didn’t belong to. They had no idea that they freaked her out as they fixed raw hamburgers for the kids’ dinner. They offered her one, only cooked, too. She thought that was weird.
Then they asked her to watch the kids while they went for a late night hunt. They asked her to do this as they were stripping down to bare skin. This might have freaked her out as well, but she and her ex-husband had lived next to Britney Spears for two years. That woman was perfectly capable of doing something this bizarre, so Sandra said yes. She fell asleep with eight tired, squirmy children sprawled out on top of her in a puppy pile after telling them every single camp fire story she remembered from her childhood. She woke up with eight mountain lion cubs buried in her double sleeping bag with her.
Raw hamburgers explained.
After a moment of confusion, it slowly started to sink in what Mr. Too-Sexy-By-Half had meant when he said “her type” didn’t belong on this camping trip. By the time she extracted herself from her sleeping bag without waking anyone else up, she had made up her mind to prove him wrong. She genuinely liked these people, er, animals. Yes, they were definitely not what she was used to but she hadn’t really belonged with her “usual” crowd, either. Besides, it was just a one-week camping trip. Surly she could deal with people who turned furry at night for a week. Especially if it made that insufferable Kevin uncomfortable.
She was glad had refused to leave. These cubs were so awesome to be around! They lived solitary lives for the most part and hadn’t really known how to do things as a group. Their mothers didn’t seem to understand the concept, either. Kevin had explained on the first day that this trip was to bring the cougar population closer, to form tighter bonds to help them move into the 21st century. He had stared right at her with those liquid gold eyes and a sarcastic smirk on his beautiful mouth while he said it, too.
The problem was, while everyone present was all for the idea, they had no idea how to actually be a group. Even Kevin had been clueless. That first night, Sandra had made progress without realizing it. She had eight shifter cubs all together listening to camp fire tales. They then fell asleep in a big pile. The mothers had been shocked when they came back from their night hunt—a solo hunt, as it turned out. Kevin told them to go off and hunt together while the monkey watched the cubs. They had tried, they really had. They just didn’t know how.
Sandra’s answer to that, now that she understood what was going on, was to suggest they try teaching their cubs to fish human style. The moms didn’t know how to do this, so they thought it was great fun. The cubs all ended up in the water trying to catch fish bare handed while the moms tried to herd the fish back upstream. By the end of the “fishing” they had no fish caught but the moms had learned how to work together.
The second night, Sandra had the cubs singing campfire songs after sending the moms off to play paintball in teams. The third day, the moms got to teach their cubs how to play paintball while playing in teams. It was now the third night and Kevin was not happy with her! She chuckled at the memory of his towering over her, seething that she had “stolen” his camping trip away from him. She had leaning back into him, putting her hands on his chest, whispered “tuff titty said the kitty,” then shoved him into the creek he’d just climbed out of.
Now the cubs wanted ghost stories. Of course, Kevin had informed them that he would be conducting this evening’s entertainment, so it was to him they looked for the telling. And it looked like he didn’t have a clue how to handle it.
“No ghost stories,” he muttered gruffly. “We are going to tell hunting stories.”
“Aw…”
“Hunting stories are good!” Kevin said, dismissing the sound of disappointment coming from
the cubs.
“Miss Sandra tells good stories. Are you sure you have to be the one to tell us the stories?”
Sandra dipped her head and hid her smirk. She raised her eyes to peak and found Kevin glaring at her.
“I don’t think Sandra knows any good hunting stories,” he bit out.
“I bet Miss Sandra could tell us the bestest hunting story ever!”
“A good scary hunting story!”
Sandra dropped her head back down, shaking with her effort not to giggle out loud.
“As a matter of fact, I do know a very good hunting story. It’s the story of Courage Wolf.”
“I’m sure they don’t want to hear about wolves, Miss Sandra,” Kevin said with a glare.
“It’s not a story about a wolf, Mr. Kevin,” Sandra said snidely. “It’s a story about hunting. The bad guy is a big ghost wolf who comes out at night and eats all the little lion cubs who don’t have the courage to out-wit him!”
“YES!!!” screamed all eight cubs as the jumped up and down. “TELL US THAT ONE!!!”
Sandra let herself smile as she locked eyes with Kevin across the camp fire. She could see he wanted to refuse. But like all cats, curiosity was going to get him. He wanted to hear the story, too.
Tigress Shapeshifter... Never waiting to be tamed...
Tuesday howls and yowls, shapeshifter lovers.
She’s back... my Tigress, and yes, if violence is not your thing, tune out for this episode... although, a Haunted House is likely to have much more horror and gore.
Oh, and here’s a costume Kytaira is wearing for her black tiger lover, Zurroc.
~~~~~~

Tigress Shapeshifter... Never waiting to be tamed...

I am captured by my black tiger’s gaze. Love shines in the dark depths of Zurroc’s eyes as his thumbs caress my cheeks. He has embraced my head between his palms, and my body doesn’t know whether to surrender against him, or attack him with fierce passion.

“One reason I love you,” he silkily rumbles, “you will never be tamed, my tigress, my Kytaira.”

“Only by your hand, your lusty paw.” My whispered words feel like mist and smoke deep in my throat -- and as they pass my lips.

"Never waiting to be tamed,” he croons -- his twist on the song lyrics ‘waiting to be tamed’.

His seductive tease curls my toes, and I feel my inner claws flex with pleasure.

“If it weren’t for this meeting...” I begin, then stroke his hands with mine.

His lips find mine fast, yet his languidly nibbling kiss is slow, a sweet torment to my senses. “I’ll put the coffee on,” he purrs long moments later.

“Lots of cream, please.” I blink, gathering my mental faculties for what is to come.

As he raises his face from mine, his expression changes to ferociously serious. “Seeing those twenty flatbed trucks in the dead of night.” He pauses, and I watch the anger flash in his eyes. “Loaded with drone planes and an artillery of advanced weapons -- all meant to use against New Yorkers...” he pauses again. “I want to rip their throats out. Leave their bodies as food for the carrion eaters.”

“Yes. It is all the cowards deserve.” I sigh inwardly. I know his rage. It eats at my insides, which is why we are meeting with Swamp Fox, and his crew, in less than an hour.

“New York City is no longer safe for us,” he growls with alpha-emphasis.

“Afterward, we will discuss it.” But, I know he is right. The war against injustice, against evil has come to the city streets. Soon it will be chaos at its worst.

His hands slip from my head, and we gaze at each for another moment before I spin, and break into a running stride. “Roof,” I holler back.

In the dim light of early evening, I ascend the outside stairs at a rapid pace. Once I stand within the protected area of my warehouse rooftop, I glimpse the massive protest taking place against the Wall Street racketeers.

Humanity is rising, finally. It won’t be a pretty thing, this soul rise toward freedom. It will be messy and savage and chaotic -- bestial at times.

I focus my gaze, and switch to infrared sight, then scan for any sign of an approaching enemy. Once, I’m satisfied we’re relatively safe for right now, I recall part of Volcano’s Angelic Forecast for this week:

The major theme for this week is everything ECONOMIC. Once again, this will have two main faces, but many differing aspects. With the rise of the renegade as part of the AWAKENING, all forms of corruption and enslavement will be challenged.

At the same time, the brutal money monopoly that has been placed over humanity, worldwide, is being tightened, and a militaristic regime is being introduced incrementally. Any manner of catastrophe, natural or not, will be used as an excuse to implement this ‘papers, please’ regime.

Just as he communicated through a trusted friend, I see a fox dart from beneath a large commercial truck. The Swamp Fox runs through the alleyway’s shadows. Behind him is his right hand man, a badger shapeshifter, who goes by the pseudo name of Ben Franklin. Some silly part of me wonders if he wears spectacles.

Observing their stealthy approach toward my warehouse, I buzz with a sudden ‘knowing’ that now is the night to strike. As I move to meet them at the bottom of the outside stairway, scenes from an old Disney TV series called “The Swamp Fox” play out before my mind’s eye.

Out of curiosity, and to understand my Swamp Fox’s mind-set, I watched the series about the American Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion. Like youthful cubs, both Zurroc and I cheered his cleverly conceived, surprise attacks against the British troops.

The closer I come to Swamp Fox and Ben Badger, the more I ‘sense’ and scent their determination, their revolutionary spirit. Pausing in the deep shadow at the corner of my warehouse, Swamp Fox morphs to his human form quickly, and gives me a rakish grin. Beside him, Ben growl-grunts as a badger, then groans as he shifts.

I toss the bag of clothes and gear, delivered earlier in the day, at Swamp Fox’s feet. Dropping to his haunches, he jerks it open. His shock of foxfire red hair falls onto his forehead as he grabs out two bundles of clothing.

After he tosses one bundle to Ben Badger, they efficiently dress in the way of shapeshifters, and I motion for them to follow me inside. Zurroc meets us, holding a tray with hot brimming cups of coffee.

“This room is sealed against surveillance,” I tell them as I shut the thick steel door, lined with lead.

Reaching within the bag again, Swamp Fox thrusts a news article toward me, asking, “Have you read this?”

Taking a moment, I peruse what I already know.

NYPD chief: Police could take down plane if needed
Commissioner Ray Kelly tells CBS' "60 Minutes" that after the Sept. 11 attacks, he decided the city couldn't rely on the federal government alone. He set about creating the NYPD's own counter-terrorism unit. He says the department is prepared for multiple scenarios and could even take down a plane.

“You saw the black ops convoy, right?” Swamp Fox sweeps his gaze around our small hideaway bunker.

“We saw,” Zurroc snarls. “Do you have a storage area large enough for NYPD’s anti-aircraft weaponry?”

“Yeah,” Ben Badger answers. “Me, and the boys dug it out ourselves. Made it real private and real inaccessible.”

Lifting my mug of creamy coffee, I sniff the earthy yummy goodness before I take a sip. “Is your crew ready to guerilla-rock ‘n roll tonight?” I ask, then study their faces.

“My crew is in position. At my signal, we’re a go.” Swamp Fox takes a swig of his coffee, his gaze keen as the fox he is.

“In under ten minutes, the crew will move the vehicles into position,” Ben Badger adds, “If you two can get us inside the armory, we got the muscle to load up quicker’n a New York minute.”

“You did not just say that,” I tease. Already, my blood runs high and my claws ache to spring free.

“We’re loaded for bear, and the bears are ready to load,” Swamp Fox quips with a flash of his gaze.

***

Around me is the dark of night. The air is heavy with moisture, the stars hidden by an overcast, rain-threatening sky. As tigress, I sniff the familiar odors of New York City -- layer upon layer of humanity at its most potent. I smell the city at its grimiest -- moldering, days’ old garbage... dense colonies of mice and rats... the ammonia tang of urine and feces embedded in concrete.

Most of all, I scent the sweating stink of the outside guards, all of them on heavy dosages of steroids. Strolling toward the forties-era, double door of the fortress-like building, I ignore their stunned shouts at my approach.

Pulling out their revolvers, three of the guards fire. I’ve already phased to near incorporeal so the bullets are of no consequence. I leap through the door, and once inside I return to full materialized beast.

To announce my presence, and make myself a target, I bellow a long roar. Guards that look like Halloween Darth Vader’s race toward me, drawing their high-powered laser rifles, and aiming.

Several alarms activate. Their whines and screams blast my ears, and I flatten them tight against my head. Launching into a gallop, I run down a central corridor while dodging the bursts of laser fire.

Before my mind’s eyes, I watch Zurroc use his powers to dissolve a portion of the armory’s outer wall, large enough for Swamp Fox and his crew to enter. With deadly ease, they take out the four guards who have stayed. Then, like a well-oiled machine, the crew begins to load the cache of high-tech weapons and ammunition.

Whirling on my haunches, I lope in the opposite direction of the armory. Not to my surprise, I am being chased by a whole cadre of super guards who haven’t known one day’s service on the police force -- given they reek of bio-engineered enhancements.

Sprinting through a maize of corridors, I catch glimpses of what has been stored in this underground section of the compound. My blood blazes hot and my savage nature burns for a taste of traitorous blood.

First things first. Keep the bio-Vader guards on my tigress tail.

That is... until a whiff of something so deadly enters my nostrils, that I nearly stumble and cringe. For lack of a better description, it’s a suitcase nuke, and one in prime condition. Ready to be used.

With a roar of outrage, I whip around and charge toward the guards. Rapidly, they take up positions along both sides of the corridor, their laser rifles trained on me.

Up shields, I mentally shout to myself, then alter my vibrations to create the barrier. With each racing bound toward the nuke, I gain speed. The laser pulses bounce off my hide, a regular disco light show.

Figuring out somewhat fast that their weapons did nothing to hinder my progress, the remaining twenty or so guards ahead of me, grab their titanium machine guns and blast away -- I can’t help but think of Bonnie and Clyde.

Since I can’t spare the time to slash my claws across their throats, I morph my hide once again, and run even faster. The hail of bullets strike, ping at a low frequency, then fly, returning like tiny boomerangs.

What carnage is behind me, I have no clue. The smell of blood saturates the air. Why their uniforms weren’t bullet-proof against those flesh-exploding bullets...? I shrug mentally, even as I focus on my all-important prize.

The suitcase nuke sits atop a pedestal, and is locked inside a plexiglass-like safe that is far stronger than steel. I come to an abrupt halt about ten feet away. Crouching, I spring while altering my front paw to my human hand.

Dematerializing my hand and the plexiglass just enough, I seize the case’s handle. The instant it’s out of the safe, I toss it a good distance ahead. Before I land on the floor, I shift my hand back to a paw. With one motion, and already in a sprint, I snag the case’s handles between my fangs.

Then, it’s a race to the finish line, a race to Zurroc’s hole in the wall. Doors fall like guillotine blades behind me. I could phase through them, but I can’t alter the nuke in my tigress form. If I switch to human, my speed lessens, and I am not certain I could dissipate the nuke’s energy matrix without Zurroc’s help.

Two more doors ahead of me, both of them slicing downward. Racing at wind’s speed, I clear one of them. With a glancing blow to the tip of my tail, I make it past the final door.

Zurroc, I mentally scream.

My tigress. He sends a mind beam to guide me into his arms.

Psi-seeing him, I dash through the huge, full-of-rooms armory until I glimpse him running toward me.

No! Outside, I scream telepathically, then charge toward the hole.

For instants, we run side by side. Me as tigress. Him as man.

Nuke, I yell to his mind, once the chilly autumn wind hits our faces.

In seconds, he is seizing hold of the case while I shift. Joining him as woman, I place my palms on the nuke. Together, we concentrate and disassemble the particle matrix until there is nothing left but harmless atoms.

“Neat trick, that one,” Swamp Fox hollers softly from the back of a semi truck.

“Get out of here. Double quick,” I shout back.

With a jaunty salute, he steps back and the door lowers. Already, the truck is in motion, the gears ratcheting up. It’s a good thing since I hear the faraway drone of black helicopters.

“I hope they have a good escape route,” I murmur.

“Escape, what a superior idea,” my black tiger rumbles. He swings me into his arms, and runs the short distance to our tech-invisible van.

Within moments, we are on the way home, and I’m wrapping a soft warm blanket around myself. I reach for his hand as we cruise the back streets, and an intimate silence envelopes us, one I have come to treasure.

“My Tigress, never waiting to be tamed by the unknown paw of fate,” he growls long moments later.

“Not with a nuke between my teeth,” I say.

He laughs, my black tiger. Yet underneath his laughter, I hear his lover’s concern for me.

Squeezing his hand, I lean toward him. “Later... I want some taming... whatever taming gives you the most pleasure.”

His carnal growl is my answer.

Kick Like a Muley

Cliff and Tom, the Hanson brothers, scratched their heads and frowned. Any other time the trophy buck in the bed of their truck would have drawn a crowd. Especially in a backwoods town like Talbot’s Peak, Montana. This far off the interstate, the place must be chocked full of hunters. People should be oogling their kill’s rack or grumbling with envy.

Kasey, the Hanson sister, didn’t give two hoots about hunter adoration. She hugged herself against the morning chill and eyed the coffee shop across the street with longing.

“Are we going to get breakfast any time soon?” she finally asked.

“In a minute,” Cliff snapped. “Cripes. What’s with these people?”

“Maybe they’re all pissed because we showed ‘em how it’s done,” Tom suggested.

“Maybe they’re all pissed because it’s not deer season,” Kasey pointed out. “You’re not going to get any awards, you’re going to get arrested. Put a tarp over that thing and let’s go eat.”

“In a minute,” Cliff repeated. “I’m not leaving until somebody makes a comment.”

“We’ve gotten comments,” Kasey said. “Or are you waiting for ‘You’re under arrest’?”

“I meant a real comment. If I hear ‘Are you gonna eat that?’ one more time, I’m punching somebody.”

Kasey noticed he didn’t mention the snarled “Murderers!” their kill had garnered. Or that one kid, who’d rushed up to the truck with a stricken look and a gasped, “Uncle Johnny?” He’d walked away relieved, but not before he shot all three of them the filthiest look she’d ever seen on a teenager, and teens were masters of the scowl. If these people were hunters, they wouldn’t appreciate poachers in their turf. Why couldn’t her moronic brothers see that?

She didn’t want to be here. She hated hunting. She hated meat and anything to do with meat. She wanted to go back to the dude ranch and ride into the mountains in search of the rumored unicorn. Instead she was stuck here, shivering and hungry, with the Two Stooges. She’d had no idea what they’d been up to on their own vacation until she’d seen the carcass in the trunk.

“That’s it,” she said, and marched off. “You bozos do whatever you want. I’m getting breakfast.”

“Get back here!” Cliff made a grab for her, but she dodged him easily and sprinted up the block. She had her eye on a little place tucked in between a dress shop and a newspaper office, with a picture of a bighorn sheep and the word “diner” over the door. She ducked inside and paused to catch her breath.

And what a breath it turned out to be, heavy with fried, boiled, baked and toasted food odors, not a one tainted with meat. Kasey drew in a second, longer, more indulgent breath and let it sigh free.

The stocky, middle-aged woman behind the counter smiled at her. “Morning, honey. Get you something?”

“You don’t serve meat here, do you?”

A tiny frown line appeared between the woman’s brows. “Not in my diner. You want meat, try Vinnie Mac’s across the street. We’re herbivore-only here.”

Kasey sighed again. “I’m home. You serve pancakes?”

That brought a laugh from the woman. “We don’t use that word in polite company. I can get you flapjacks. Best in the state.”

“Bran muffins?”

“Second best. The coffee shop’s got me beat there. I’m trying to steal their recipe.”

“In that case,” Kasey said, heading for a booth, “I’ll have a plate of blueberry flapjacks and a – ”

The door swung open and Cliff charged in, Tom at his heels. Cliff grabbed her arm. “What the hell you think you’re doing, sis? Let’s go.”

“Beat it. I’m having breakfast. Go pose by your stupid dead deer.” Kasey tried to wrench free, but Cliff had clamped on like a bulldog. “Let go of me, you jerk!”

The woman came around the counter, at a slight crouch and with head lowered, like a ram about to charge. “No fights in my place, boys. Let the lady go.” She peered up at the men. “So you’re the boys who shot the deer? You know this is all private land around here, right? No outside hunters, not even in season. Which this isn’t, by the way. Didn’t they tell you that when you came in?”

“Some cop said something when he checked our licenses. I wasn’t listening all that hard.” Cliff didn’t sound one bit worried about possible game law violations. He sucked in his gut and loomed over the woman. All Kasey could think of was how much he looked like a target.

The woman shook her head. “Bambi’s gonna kick your ass.”

“Why? Because we shot his dad?” Cliff guffawed. “Cripes. This whole town is screwy. C’mon, Kase, we’re out of here.”

He turned to drag her out, but found the doorway blocked by two men in ranger uniforms. Even though the man in the lead appeared to be built out of concrete blocks, it was his smaller, slender companion who caught and held Kasey’s attention. Her stare went straight to his eyes, huge orbs the color of melted dark chocolate. Caught up in his eyes, she almost missed the rest of him: a long, pleasant face, slim hips, sure, silent movements like a stag gliding through a forest. The ears took her by surprise; they stuck out of his sandy-brown hair and almost appeared to swivel. He noticed her interest and nodded politely. Kasey made a grunt and looked away.

The brick wall of a ranger looked beyond Cliff to the woman. “It’s okay, Ma,” he said. “It’s nobody we know. I think it’s a realie. Looks like Ol’ Scratch. Local muley,” he continued to Cliff. “Got his name because of the rubs he leaves all over the trees. Or he did until somebody shot him.”

Ever the pragmatist, Cliff turned from the brawny ranger to his less-imposing partner. “So what? It’s just a damn deer. The Constitution says I can carry a gun and hunt anywhere I want to. It’s my God-given right as an American.”

“Not in this town,” the ranger with the liquid eyes said. He flashed a badge, as did his partner. “Wildlife Control Officers Buck and Ewing. You’re coming with us to the sheriff’s office.”

“The hell I am.” Cliff took a swing at WCO Buck. Buck wasn’t there to receive it. He just seemed to slide out of the way. His leg shot out and caught Cliff square in the gut. Cliff hit the floor and lay there, groaning. Neither the woman nor WCO Ewing made any move to help him.

Tom gaped down at his brother. Also a pragmatist, he said quickly, “This was all his idea. I was against it from the start. Tell them, Kasey.”

“Tell them what? I spent the last week on a dude ranch. How was I supposed to know you two would decide to be stupid again?”

“You’re not implicated, miss,” Buck said. “All the witnesses agree it was two monkeys – I mean, two men in a pickup truck. We will be pressing charges, though. Here in Talbot’s Peak we take our hunting seriously.”

“From both ends,” Ewing added drily. He lifted Cliff off the floor with one arm and no elaboration, leaving Kasey to wonder what he meant by that remark. His other arm locked onto Tom, who wisely put up no resistance. “You too, miss,” he said to Kasey.

“Hold on, Hannibal,” the woman spoke up. “This poor girl hasn’t had her breakfast yet.”

“Aw, c’mon, Ma, I’m working.”

“And what’s she going to do? Sit on her thumbs while Busby crosses all his little t’s? She can go through a stack of flapjacks and still get there in time to post bail.”

“I’ll guard her,” Buck offered. “See that she doesn’t make a break for it.”

Ewing snorted at them both. “You know where we’ll be. Ma, can you whip me up a couple of those apple fritters of yours? Bambi can bring ‘em over.” He escorted his prisoners from the diner.

Kasey watched a blush grow on Buck’s face. “Bambi?”

“A nickname. I thought it would go away after high school. My real name’s Gary Buck.” He took her hand and thought, What lovely fingers. And what a lovely smell. Not a whiff of meat or grease marred it, unlike the bulk of the humans he came across. His ears tipped forward, not enough to alarm her. Normally he didn’t swing with monkeys, but this woman’s scent, as fresh as a doe’s, made him reconsider. “Buy you breakfast?”

A New Love Interest

Josh groaned as the next contestant stepped to the microphone. Of all the screwed things Anthony could have come up with, he decided to introduce Karaoke Night at the bar. It wasn’t enough that a bunch of drunk horny shape shifters crashed and trashed the bar almost every full moon. Now they were howling to oldies but goodies from 60’s and 70’s along with tunes from the 80’s and 90’s too.

The gent dressed in business slacks and a button down shirt looked severely out of place amongst the oilrig workers, bikers, and other mix of gay and straight clients filling the bar. His trimmed beard and short hair stuck out amongst long hair, jeans, t-shirts and leather gear. Not that the local shifters didn’t own respectable businesses like the humans in town. Josh smiled remembering the look on Sally’s face when she learned her Gynecologist was a wolf three nights out of the month.

Grey gazed out over the audience. It seemed weird to not be in his usual stage costume. Leather pants and emblem emblazed t-shirt from the tour’s sponsor adoring his chest. Since the group broke up 6 months prior, he’d taken time to assess where his life was heading and what he’d done. The money and music fulfilled part of his needs. Parts of him long for a mate who understood his roving eye and didn’t mind sharing. He didn’t mind another man present. No sexual thrills of bi longings went unsatisfied. He liked seeing his mate well-loved and sated. The few threesomes he’d share with his ex had been worth the growth and learning curves. Now he needed to find the music singing in his soul again. To find the one person or persons who’d take him as he was.

“Good evening. My name’s Grey. I’d like to sing a tune I wrote a few years back. Does anyone have a guitar I can use?” Someone called out. An acoustic guitar passed forward through the crowd. A tall red headed Irish looking dude held up his hand.

“Enjoy and return to me when you’re done please.” Grey liked the sound of his Irish accent. He reminded Grey of his best friend Smith. Those were days when the band was belting out number one hits every three weeks. Days and often months spent on the road touring. A time that was good in the moment. Now Grey wanted more permanence in his life.

“Thanks.” Grey strummed the strings, tuning here and there. Before he struck his first chord, he inhaled. Her scent run up his nostrils and settled on his psyche as if she’d been waiting for him to notice her. He sniffed again. Her subtle scent and aroma tickled her way around his palate and ignited his desire in a way he hadn’t felt for a few years. A quick glance revealed no female close to the stage. Hmm, was his ego stroking his horny id into existence or was he remembering another time and place?

Michelle stood near the back of the crowded bar. She’d made more in tips tonight than any other. Tory had told her from the start that working the bar would pan out. Two of the oilrig workers tipped generously as she kept their beers refilled and hot food before them. Tory smiled as she instructed her nanny to keep an eye on Michelle’s toddler. Life was taking on normalcy again. Michelle slumped against the wall and let her guard down. Maybe, just maybe, she was safe. Running and hiding had to stop.

Grey cleared his throat and began playing. The chords and music burst forth like old friends welcoming him back. He closed his eyes and sang.

Alone you watch and wait

I know your pain

Wondering if you like I am alone

With no one to call your own

Night after night, you plan

Only to see it all die in a flash of light

As your heart calls out where is a home for me

Grey sang three more verses. His strong tenor tones reached out across the crowded room caressing Michelle with each note and sound. It was as though his eyes met hers and refused to look away. She reached into her serving apron, pulled out a tissue and dabbed at the tears threatening to flow.

Michelle inched along the wall working her way toward the swinging kitchen door. Freedom awaited her. She’d ---she’d what. Run again? Hide and cower in fear? How could he know? The lone musician sang a lonely love song that seared her soul. How could he know her pain and anguish he summed up so succinctly in words and melody?
