Walking in the confines of the woods for so many hours had been disconcerting to say the least. Every time she heard leaves rustle, adrenaline jolted through her in anticipation of a bear, wolf, or bogeyman jumping out to kill her. A break from the trees would alone be a welcomed sight.
As she neared the clearing, there were zero sounds of development. No engines, cars, people, or anything. Ingrid tried not to get her hopes up because she couldn’t take another emotional crash.
Then she spotted it.
A service station. Though filled with optimism, she didn’t allow herself to get too worked up. The place looked deserted at best. It had once served gas, but the pumps were dry and abandoned, and signs were illegible from the harsh Canadian weather and lack of maintenance. The one-story building behind the pumps had a few broken windows but looked solid enough. Maybe she would be able to find something to eat or drink. A pay phone if she was really lucky.
Ingrid stumbled across the broken asphalt lot toward the building. The shelter itself came as a blessing. At least she’d have somewhere to sleep that night if nothing else. The double glass doors were locked. She shook the handles furiously with both hands. They only rattled and protested but didn’t budge open.
After wiping a filthy section of glass clean with the hem of her dress, she bent down and peered inside. The long counter and stools dominated the back wall. Tables and red vinyl upholstered chairs were scattered about, some overturned on tables. A thick layer of dust covered every surface. After a perimeter check, she’d break a window to get in if necessary. The promise of a real toilet as opposed to having her butt kissing the open air was enough incentive to break and enter. Ingrid never was one for the whole camping experience. Give her a luxury hotel suite over a dirt floor any day.
The sound of her shoes crunching the gravel sounded obscenely loud as she paced around the side of the building. A couple hawks flew overhead as if keeping tabs on her activities.
“Can I help you?”
A voice was the last thing she expected in this deserted piece of nowhere. She spun around, laying a hand on the building for support.
“Who are you?” she asked, nearly breathless from shock. The man didn’t match the territory. If someone lived out here, she expected to see a bushman or hunter wearing camo or orange reflective gear. Some kind of homely hobo type, not a stunning specimen of manflesh. The guy looked down on her. He had to be at least a couple inches taller than six feet. He had thick, dark waves of hair and light eyes. On closer inspection, she noted the unusual color. His eyes were a greenish-yellow and held her attention.
“Me? This is my land. I live here.”
Ingrid turned her head and looked around, still finding nothing but fields and forests with mountains in the distance. Surely the guy didn’t live in the back of the run-down restaurant. His jeans and T-shirt appeared clean enough, and that place was grimy.
“My car broke down quite a ways back. Do you have a phone I could use? I need to get a ride back to Vancouver.”
“A city girl way out here?” He tilted his head and appraised her. She must look a sight. Without a mirror, she imagined her hair looked like a rat’s nest and her black dress was dusty and dirty. Miles back, her purse strap broke, and she’d tied the heavy bundle around her waist. She shouldn’t care what she looked like, but this guy turned her on in new ways, and she wished she had been presentable.
“About that phone.”
The guy wouldn’t move. He seemed quite comfortable leaning against the building, looking her over. Why wasn’t she afraid? She should be, shouldn’t she? Perhaps due to the fact that she felt near death from starvation and exhaustion clouded her judgment. He didn’t look like an axe murderer. In fact, if she found him at a club, she’d have picked him up in an instant. He was so fuckable that a woman would take a one-nighter with him if that was all she could get.
“No phone,” he said.
“No phone? What do you mean ‘no phone’?” Now she felt irritation lash at her. Who didn’t have a telephone in this day and age? At her apartment, she had every electronic device known to man. Her second home was on the internet. They should have called her cyber-woman. “No phone” simply was not acceptable.
“No electricity,” he said in the same even tone.
He shoved off the building with his arms crossed over his broad chest, and he half circled her with a hungry look in his eyes. She knew that look well. He wanted her. Living out here, she imagined the selection of women would be minimal. Why else would he have lust in his eyes when she looked worse than shit?
“Do you have a car then? Anything useful?”
He smirked, appearing to enjoy her annoyance.
She changed her strategy since she was getting nowhere. “Do you have something to eat? Anything? I haven’t eaten since breakfast yesterday, and I’ve been walking all day.” Once she had her basic needs met, her mind would be clear to focus on the bigger picture of getting home.
“I can find you something to eat. Our cabin isn’t too far of a hike from here. There’s a good watering hole out back if you want to wash up.”
Watering hole? What the fuck was a watering hole? Just the thought of another hike when she was dead on her feet made her pout like a child.
He lowered his brow at her sullen posture. “Do you want me to carry you?”
“No, I don’t want you to carry me. Actually, I don’t even know your name. I’m Ingrid.”
“My name is Callen.”
She mulled his name over in her head. It came close to a few names she knew, but she’d never heard that exact one before.
“Well, thanks for your help, Callen. I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t shown up.”
They began walking toward the forest beyond the spacious field behind the restaurant, side by side.
“You’re lucky the wolves didn’t find you before I did,” he said with a chuckle.
Great. She had been right. Who knew what kind of creatures stalked her as she walked along that never-ending road that cut through the forest? Ingrid shuddered at what could have happened had it been dark.

Hi, Stacey! Welcome to the dog pound!
Yeah, Serena, I hear you. All I ever find at the local Sheetz are high school kids and middle-aged Pakistanis. This is why we write fantasy. Callen sounds like he can really fill a gal's tank, wink wink nudge nudge.
Pat, fill a gal's tank... hehe...
YUM, Stacey! Love the cover AND the excerpt!
