Why Are There So Few Shapeshifter Halloween Costumes?

Good Friday Morning, my shapeshifter loving friends!

So, true story...

Last night, as I sat with my Darling Diva at a PTA sponsored Book Bingo, dinner(cheap pizza and a cookie) and pick up your fundraiser(of which one of the few things I bought is missing)...can you tell what kind of week it's been, I got to looking around the room at all of the little cuties costumes.

There were ninjas and witches, Princesses and Power Rangers, sports and rockstars...there was even a kid dressed as the grumpy old dude in the movie UP.  Very cute.  What was missing though were the animals.

Now as a kid, I would sometimes dress up as the famed black cat.  Ah, how I loved that costume.  In my own head, I was a shapeshifter, of course.  Sometimes cat and sometime a sneaky(as cats are, you know) vixen.

But last night...No black cats!

Can you believe it!  What happened to the animal/shapeshifter costumes out there?  Do they not make them?  Do kids prefer the store bought rather than making their own?  Am I the only one who considered dressing up as an animal more like being a shapeshifter for Halloween(quite possible)

I did however see two animal costumes.  Well two and a half, really.  One was a sweet little white lamb and the other two...wait for it,  A Queen bee and her cutie baby bee!!  Oh she was so cute in her matching her mama costume!  It surely would have won the best costume contest, if they'd had one.

Alas, that was it for animal/shapeshifter costumes, but I still have Halloween night to check out the goods...how many will I see on Sunday night as Darling Diva and I pass out candy?  Trust me, I will be counting...and those with animal costumes might just get an extra piece of candy from me!  muahahaha

One year in grade school I went as Flipper, but it was a storebought costume. Other than that, I don't think I ever went as an animal. Real shapeshifters, of course, don't need costumes.

Kids tend to go with whatever's popular, so you'll see tons of vampires but no werewolves. I'm betting Scooby-Doo is about as close as you'll get. I don't think Spider-Man counts as a shapeshifter.

I was always either a zombie, a vampire or a werewolf as a kid. Well, with exception of the year I dressed up like a condom. But I was a teen by then and so it doesn’t really count.

Around here, you see a lot of skeletons because a lot of people mix Mexican Day Of The Dead traditions with Halloween traditions. We also see a lot of really off-the-wall costumes like teeth, potatoes, road cones. But not so many animals. I hadn’t really noticed that until you said something.

Hmmmm... we don't get trick or treaters where I am... and I'm not going out for Halloween... but wouldn't I love going to a black cat costume party or a shapeshifter, come as your fave animal party.

I dressed up in animal costumes, but mom made them. Actually, there wasn't store bought back then. I went as a horse and I had a gorgeous yarn tail. I went as a black cat... later, my dad would always make us ghosts probably because the numbers had increased and it wasn't that expensive... lol... I did have a beautiful ballerina costume mom made me for my birthday. And I wore that for Halloween.

When I started making my own, I'd make something I could run around the neighborhood in and not trip over, and also see. Gypsy, cowgirl, Zorro. Clown costumes were popular, which I hate, and scarecrow... not too wild about that, either... you saw a lot of pumpkinheads... later, Nixon started the whole gory politician realistic mask thing... naw, I never did that either.

I wasn't aware of shapeshifting back then. It wasn't at all part of the culture. However, I always wanted to be a horse. Or an animal.

Ooh Pat, Flipper would have been a cool costume! Scooby was big when I was a kid...I love that dog. ;) Spidy as a shapeshifter, hmm, probably not. lol

OMG, Rebecca, a condom! That is classic...LOL Did you get a lot of comments that year?

Awesome costumes, Savanna! Man how I wished my mom could sew when I was a kid. There were so many costumes I would have loved to have! Most of the time she would drag out the ratty clothes, and a wine cork which she would burn and create smudges...instant hobo. hehe I quickly learned how to turn my own clothes in some sort of costume!

Oh man now that you mention it, I do remember a ton of president masks when I was a kid. They were made out of that cheap stinky plastic that alway tore before Halloween! LOL

I did get a lot of comments, though I wasn't alone in the gross costume category. I was amazed my usually astute mother didn't figure out what I REALLY was. One friend dressed as a toilette paper roll and another was a douche bottle. We were pretending to be the contents of a bathroom trash can.

LOL...Did you win the creative costume award? Because you and your friends sure deserved it!

We were lucky not to get suspended because we went to school dressed like this. Not One Adult realized what we were, but every single kid did. We were so lucky no one snarked on us...

Dang. Now I gotta go look on FB and see if I can find any of them.

Rebecca, you were lucky!!!

Didn't see this one, only heard it described, but oh how I wish I'd been there: a guy went to a party in a tennis outfit with a tennis racquet and in full KISS makeup. His costume: Billie Jean Simmons ...

Hey! That's a real scream. And, I heard about that one too. But, I didn't see it, except maybe a pic.

Omgosh Pat, that would have been a scream to see! :)
