My Five Favorite Fearsome Flix On Friday...

So I thought today being Friday, I'd have a little fun and share the top five scariest movies I've seen. And yes, I was a bit stumped for a topic this week, but this will be fun too!

Here we go...

1. The Shining - Seriously, my man Jack, possessed or did he just go stark raving coo coo, talking to ghosts in that big lonely old hotel and terrorizing his wife and child with an axe...chasing ~shudder~ them. Ick and dang scare me some more!! Let us not forget that he was also a struggling writer! I too have my days like that, but Heeeerrree's Serena! just doesn't have the same ring to it!

2. The Exorcist - Devil possession, painful crucifix action and head twisting split pea spewage did me in. This was of course after about the fifth attempt at watching it. I made it through once and never looked back. There is something about possession flix that scare the holy bejeezus out of me.

3. The Amityville Horror - Now we have house possession. Glowing eyes in the windows and repeated risings at 3:15 in the morning. I still freak if I should happen to wake up and need to pee anywhere around that 3am mark! LOL I blame it all on my dad. An eight year old child has no business seeing this movie at the theater, even if mom couldn't use the free ticket!! ;)

4. When A Stranger Calls - I have to admit here that I never made it past the initial fright of the cops telling the babysitter that her crank caller was calling from inside the house. Eep, some sicko killer is in the house with you calling from a different phone, while you are there babysitting someone else's children. Oh man, covering my eyes and ears here! This was another movie I was probably to young to watch. :) I do however remember getting several crank calls back then and it always brings this movie back!

5. Salem's Lot - This movie both horrified and turned my young self on. It was my first Vampire experience and the I want to suck your blood, alpha, I'll kill you if you get between me and my woman thing erm, yeah - I have a hard time seeing vamps as bad guys. ;)

There ya have it, my top five scary movies. What do you think? Did these scare you? Intrigue you?

What movies top your scare-o-meter?

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Serena,
I have to agree with you on most of those. The excorcist came out on tv when I was about 11. My little brother and I weren't allowed to watch it, so we snuck out one end of the house and came back in through the garage to peek through the hall into the family room where my dad was watching it. We got caught, and he said "okay, if you really want to watch it." One of the biggest mistakes my brother and I ever made. I guess we learned our lesson!

I saw a creepy one recently called "The Ruins." It's about a bunch of young tourists in Mexico who go to a forbidden temple covered with a man-eating vine. Once they've touched it, the locals won't let them leave it. No scary zombies or hatchet weilders, but very creepy.

Hey Crystal,
LOL - see just telling you that you can't watch something is sooo not the way to go with kiddo's. Had your dad told you it was about the devil getting all up inside a little girl and making do yucky things you probably would have said...dad, you watch nasty stuff and went happily on about your business! hehehe

Never saw The Ruins, but some of the most non creature like shows tend to be almost spookier. The Sixth Sense anyone! "I see dead people, and you're it Bruce!!"

Have a great weekend!

I can't help but notice two of your picks are based on Stephen King novels. Allow me to add another: It, both the book and the miniseries. The film version kind of fell down towards the end, but as long as it stayed with the kids it was terrific. And Tim Curry in clown makeup -- that's scary.

Now imagine yourself reading the book late at night, with the creepy monster down in the sewers, and then walking down a long dark hall to the bathroom. I won't make that mistake again.

Come to think of it, The Shining, 'Salem's Lot and It all had writers as heroes. You'd think Stevie had a fixation or something.

Great movies. I saw one called Prince of Darkness (believe that was the title) about this group of people investigating this relic in a church basement. SCARY. LOL.

Oh my yes, Pat, It was scary! Both the book and movie. Tim Curry's clown spooked me for a good long time. I loved the grouping of kids they pulled together. All the hard luck, nerdy and painfully different kids. They overcome everything! Love it!

LOL...Little Stevie was most assuradly fixated! Now if we are talking books of his...Skeleton Crew! Nearly ever short in that book, freaked me out! Mrs. Todds Shortcut. The Dr stranded on the island doing what he did to er, survive! Yikes!

Hi Laurann,
Ooh, sounds like a scary one. I'll have to look it up. There's a new movie coming out in Sept that looks like it has some good scare factor...The Storm.

Serena -

Or that story in his latest collection (Just After Sunset?). Only Stephen King would write about someone trapped in a Job Johnny. That boy ain't right.

Oh, wait, we were talking about scary movies. Okay -- Silence of the Lambs. It rubs the lotion on its skin ...

Great list Serena, but my all time scariest? Alien. I saw it when I was around 18 and I had to sleep with the lights on for a week. I love cats but I kept wanting to screech at Ripley to run and just leave the cat alone! That was a SCARY movie. Shudder.

Wow!
So, not my topic. I saw an episode of the Twilight Zone as a kid, had horrible dreams and that was it. Rarely another horror film. I've always had nightmares even if I just peek, unless I start laughing at them. Which really some them are actually hysterically funny.

Some of the X-Files episodes and listening to real exorcisms on the late night talk shows is scary enough for me.
Actually, Buffy and Angel had some really frightening episodes.

Oh, I did see The Shining... it was horrible!!!

Hmmm, Pat, I've not read the new collection. I'm going to have to pick it up. ;) He ain't right, but darned if that keeps me from reading him! hehehe

Oh yeah, Silence is another creepfest. That guy was off the wall sick! Plus chase movies are just ish! LOL

Hey Francesca,
Yep, Alien. Another pee your pants scary movie. All that hiding and jumping out to scare her freaked me right out...I saw that one through the slits in my fingers! LOL

Have you seen Defying Gravity on Sun nights? Reminds me of Alien, kind of, it is really good!
Have a great weekend!

Hey Savanna,
Not into the horror shows, huh. Probably a darn good idea. hehehe I'm one of those who can not stop myself from the scary stuff, even though I know it is going to haunt me. Now I make the hubster watch with me...cause you know nothing can get you with the alpha male on duty! ;)

Twilight Zones were freaky! They skipped the gore factor and went straight for the mental freak zone. hehe X-files too, but they employed the gore as well and when they got all alien abduction it was like, eek!

Angel and Buffy had some wickedly sexy fights...I was alway like screw the curse and get it on!!! LOL

Now I'm a Supernatural groupy! Some of those are just plain scary, but the eye candy is sooooo worth it!
Have a great weekend.

I swear,my husband and the kids used to tell me when I had to hide my eyes during scary movies--I'm only brave on paper! Of course, I thought Storm of the Century was scary! Go figure;-) When I was a kid, my favorite scary movies was the old black and white version of "The Thing"(on the late show). The Kurt Russell version is so much scarier, LOL!

Serena Shay said...

Hey Paris,
LOL - I'd hide my eyes sometimes as well, but occasionally I would watch and wish I had closed my eyes. ;)

The Thing was indeed scary, but not an eye closer for me...I'd miss Kurt if I did! Must not miss Mr. Russell!! hehe

Storm of the Century was scary, so was Tommyknockers - the book more so than the movie, but isn't that always the way it is. hehe

Have a great weekend!
