Are You A Honey, A Sweetheart Or Rawr, A Kitten?

So, pet names, do you love them or do they make you want to rip your eardrums out?

Me, I love them.  I use them in both real life and in my writing.  In my current WIP, Rick, my alpha extraordinaire, calls the heroine a kitten and I kid you not, every time I hear him say it I get weak in the knees.

Check it out...
Rick's fingers sunk deep, loosening the elastic band holding her hair hostage while adjusting the angle of her head for the deepening of his kiss.
“Still not enough, kitten, I need more of your soft, pink lips. First these…” He emphasized his point with soft gentle kisses to each lip. “…then the other.”
Oh yeah, Rick has given me some yes, sir moments indeed with his use of pet names.  ;)

Another user of the pet name that never failed to curl my toes was Spike.  Whenever he rambled on with the use of 'pet' I was a goner.  That little "Hello, Pet." done in an English accent, was just too delish!

So tell me, do you have a favorite pet name?  Do any of your characters have a pet name they brought with them from the land of newly born, and if so, what are they?

Have a great Friday!

You had to mention Spike, didn't you? And make it even worse by running a picture. Now I'll be mush for the rest of the day and won't be good for anything.

Back on topic ... now that I think about it, my guys don't use pet names that much, beyond the occasional "darlin" and in both cases the men were Texans. JR Ewing must have rubbed off on me. I'm working on a M/M right now where the guy calls his boyfriend "scarecrow" because he's so tall and skinny and, thanks to some dubious life choices, appears to have a head full of straw. Then we learn about the character's background and his use of "scarecrow" as an endearment takes on a whole new meaning. It's great when you can make a simple nickname do double duty like that.

Hehehe, yes Pat, Spike can take a girl to that happy place and provide many lovely distractions! ;)

Oooh 'Scarecrow' now that sounds interesting! I bet your hero has quite a way of saying it as well... Any accents to go along with it?

lol...double duty rocks!!

Oh, Spike... yes! yes! yes! I loved it whenever he would say that.

I do generally use pet names in my stories. I've always liked them and use them in my so-called real life. Pet names just seem natural. Only occasionally have I heard them used in a way that is icky, controlling or degrading.

Course my hellhound heroes have their Kandy Apple... maybe more of a nickname... but, it's all in the delivery and the sexy intention.

Serena loved your snippet!

Scarecrow, that is good Pat. It does do double duty.

Thanks Savanna! Yep, they feel natural to me as well. ;) And when they are used all sexy like, as is 'Cher' is with the old cajun accent, well ~shiver~ I'm a goner!

LOL...Yes, Yes, Yes, perfect things to say to the ol' Spikester! muahahahaha

Sorry, Serena, no accent for this guy. And here I just did a whole book where the guy had an English accent and I missed my chance to use pet names. I'm such a dunce sometimes.

Nah not a dunce, that just means you get to write another English accented hero! Perhaps one with white, white locks and black combat boots? ~whew, burnng up here~ ;)
